Reader #7: How Pseudonymous Comments Work on Cogweald
On Cogweald, comments are pseudonymous per story: the story's creator appears as "Creator," and every other commenter gets a sequential label — Reader #1, Reader #2, Reader #7 — assigned the first time they comment on that story. It's a deliberate design choice, and it changes how a comment section behaves.
How it works
Each story keeps its own numbering. The person who made the world is always "Creator" — a stable identity, since they're the closest thing the story has to an author. Everyone else gets the next unused number on their first comment, and keeps it for that story. Reader #7 on one serial is a different number on another; the pseudonym is per-world, not per-account.
Replies work one level deep — you can respond to a comment, and the thread stays flat enough to follow between chapters. The creator and commenters get notified when someone replies to them.
Why pseudonymous instead of accounts
Serial fiction comment culture has a specific shape: theories about what happens next, reactions to today's chapter, arguments about characters. That conversation works better when it isn't carrying your whole internet identity with it. A reader who'd never post under their real name will happily float a theory as Reader #4.
