The Place Left Empty
The stair narrowed past the keyhole, forcing the students to pass one at a time. Neris went first. The key stayed still behind them, but the red-gold notch beneath her throat warmed whenever she faced downward.
Ilyra kept the three-name rhythm going. Each group spoke its names, offered a memory, then left the warden’s name to Sella. The silence between them traveled through the passage without breaking. Neris held to that silence as carefully as she held to the rail.
The stair ended at the back of the wall bearing the twelve handprints. Here, the carved names showed through the stone as shallow ridges, their lines visible in the dim light. Below them, the floor sloped toward a low arch sealed with a slab.
The thirteenth curve had been carved on this side too. It matched the notch on Neris’s mark.
“Stay where you are,” Sella said.
She’d made the climb with Ilyra supporting most of her weight. Now she leaned against the wall, one hand pressed to her ribs. Her gaze moved over the curve and the ridges of the warden names.
Neris stopped at the foot of the stairs. “You’ve seen this part?”
“No. But it’s the same pattern from the well. The lock has put its marks on both sides.” Sella’s voice roughened. “It’s making the empty place look like it needs you.”
The notch pulled at Neris’s skin, drawing her chin toward the slab. She wanted the simplest answer: the mark had to fit, the place had to be filled, and she had been made for it. Valdyr had spent years telling her she was useless. The lock had found another way to call her necessary.
She planted her feet.
“What if it does need me?” she asked.
“Then it can say so without carving you into a piece of itself.” Sella shifted against Ilyra’s arm, trying to stand straighter. “Look below the curve.”
The stone around the arch was slick with pale dust. Neris crouched without crossing the last step and brushed the dust away with her sleeve. Fine letters appeared beneath the curve, worn almost flat. She read them slowly, tracing each line with her eyes.
KEEP THE THIRTEENTH EMPTY.
The words ended there. No name followed. No warning explained what would happen if they disobeyed.
Renn had come up behind Ilyra. He leaned to read over Neris’s shoulder, then pulled back. “So it’s a trap.”
“Maybe,” Neris said. “Or maybe the trap is thinking the blank belongs to us.”
She remembered the way the ancient key had tried to draw her into the brace. The place beneath the names had taken the same shape as her mark because the Sleeper had been pressing from the other side. A fit was not a purpose. It was a claim.

The thirteenth place is meant to stay empty, and Neris leads the group into the passage beneath it to learn what the lock is keeping there.
