The Answer That Came Back
The vibration passed through the stone again, keeping time with the voices above them. Neris crouched beside the sealed groove and held her palm just shy of its dark mouth. The faint red-gold seam beneath her throat warmed with each beat.
“Could be the Sleeper,” Ilyra said. She kept one hand on Sella’s shoulder and the other lifted, counting the students’ paired answers. “It’s been listening to us this whole time.”
“Could be,” Neris said. “But it’s answering from the wrong side of the rhythm.”
Renn, beside her, frowned. “What does that mean?”
“The beat comes after us. A little.” Neris listened again. The low pulse came, paused, and returned on the breath between one name and the next. “Like it’s waiting for space to speak.”
Sella shifted under Ilyra’s arm. “The groove is a return. If the old cut carried the answer one way, this carried it back.”
“Back to the wardens?” Neris asked.
“Or deeper into the lock.” Sella’s voice was strained, but her eyes stayed on the seam. “Valdyr sealed it. That doesn’t tell us what it was meant to do.”
A channel under Neris’s hand dimmed. One of the students had missed a warden name. Ilyra called it quietly, and the pair began again. The light returned, but it took longer than before.
They could leave the groove sealed. Their answers would keep reaching the wardens, if they could keep speaking. The group was tired, the channel was thinning, and the Sleeper had already learned to borrow their voices. Opening the return might give it a closer path to them. It might also be the only way to learn whether anyone on the other side could hear.
Neris drew a breath through the metallic taste in the chamber. “How much can you tell from the pattern?”
Sella leaned toward the stone. “The academy covered the mouth. Not the length of it. There’s a clamp woven across the groove, and it’s pressing the answer inward.”
“If I take the clamp off—”
“You might open the whole route.”
“And if she doesn’t?” Renn asked.
Sella’s gaze flicked to the pale channels. “We keep giving answers to a boundary that’s already failing.”
No one argued. The voices around them continued, each student holding a name beside a small, private memory. Neris felt the effort in their breathing. They had been asked to carry the wardens’ names, but not to be the only thing keeping them alive.
She touched the worn academy runes. Her magic found the command beneath them: contain, retain, do not return. It had been pressed over something older, as if the school had feared whatever might come back through the groove. Neris could unmake the clamp. She could also leave the path intact and let the group weaken by inches.

The wardens can finally answer the living, but the Sleeper can now repeat their true memories through the same open groove.
