The First Fastener
The first afternoon at the house
Bram measured the unfinished room and found strange cuts in its framing. Neighbor Hettie Rusk urged him to leave it alone, while her own porch showed a conspicuously open corner; when Bram drove the first screw, a figure appeared in the window reflection and the fastener bent against sound timber. He plans to test the framing, but something has begun moving inside the wall.
