The Weight Between Hands

Oliver could not see the hand that held his. He felt the fingers around his wrist, cool and firm, with a pulse that did not match his own. The darkness pressed close enough to erase the child beside him, the station, even the floor beneath his boots.

“Who will carry you?” the woman asked again.

Oliver tried to pull free. The grip tightened—not painfully, but with the patience of someone preventing a fall. “I don’t need carrying.”

The child’s fingers found the back of his coat. “You said we wouldn’t make me do it alone.”

“That’s different.”

“Why?”

Oliver had no answer that did not sound like an excuse. He could still feel the station’s burdens dropping toward their former bearers. Somewhere beyond the sealed furnace, Nadia’s core had caught the bridge. The weight had returned, but not safely. It strained against every seam in the world, and he had brought the child into the middle of it.

The woman’s voice came from near his shoulder. “You mistake carrying for possession. A burden is not proof that you are the only one who can hold it.”

“Who are you?”

“I was asked to give something away. I agreed. Later, I wished agreement could be taken back.”

The answer sounded like a memory of Queen Seris, though Oliver had heard Seris speak only through the preserved shape of a moment. He remembered her standing beside the infant Nadia, her hand hovering over the embedded core. He remembered the queen asking him to save her daughter. He remembered, more painfully, that Seris had also given something away before she understood its price.

“Seris?” he said.

The woman did not confirm it. The hand around his wrist shifted until her palm rested against his. “Names are useful outside the dark.”

A thin blue line appeared beneath Oliver’s boots. It ran across the blackness and stopped at the child’s shoes. Beyond it, a second line brightened, then a third. The station was returning by degrees: a platform edge, a hanging lamp, the pale shapes of passengers gathered around their fallen burdens.

One of them had dropped a small wooden box. It lay open near the figure’s feet. Inside was a bundle of letters tied with red thread. The figure reached for it, stopped, and looked toward Oliver instead.

“You chose for them,” the woman said. “That is not the same as choosing with them.”

Oliver saw the mistake in his own decision. He had refused to surrender the first keeper, but he had still imagined himself as the one who would decide what happened next. He had taken the child’s hand and called it rescue. The child had not been asked whether he wanted to leave the station, nor whether he wanted Oliver to lead him through it.
