The Weight of a Name

The train did not fall.

For three breathless seconds, it did something worse: it continued forward with nothing beneath it. The broken bridge hung behind them, its severed stones turning slowly in the blue distance, while the Alchemist Train crossed the open sky as if the missing span were only an inconvenience.

Oliver kept both hands on the throttle. The engine’s stabilizer gauge trembled beneath its glass. Its needle had sunk past grief and was trembling over a black mark he had never seen before.

“What is below us?” Nadia asked.

“Nothing.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the only one I have.”

The train lurched. Every loose object in the cab rose toward the ceiling: coal screws, brass tools, a chipped mug. Nadia’s boots left the floor. Oliver caught her wrist before she struck the roof, and for an instant the core beneath her ribs shone through her shirt—a pale, pulsing star wrapped in veins of blue light.

The gauge steadied.

Not from fear, Oliver realized. From contact. The moment he touched her, the needle climbed a fraction toward sorrow’s gentler edge.

Nadia saw him looking. “Do not mistake dependence for trust.”

“I don’t mistake anything.”

“Then you are the first honest engineer in the empire.”

Ahead, something glimmered in the empty air. A rail appeared, then another, assembling themselves from sparks and old iron. They stretched upward rather than forward, climbing toward a continent suspended above the clouds. Houses clung to its underside like barnacles. Rivers spilled from its edges and froze into silver ropes.

At the head of the train, the locomotive bell rang once.

Oliver had not pulled it.

The Horologist stood in the fireman’s passage between the boiler and the cab. His coat was dry. His pocket watch ticked audibly, though its hands revolved backward.

Nadia drew the little knife she carried at her hip. “You stepped into the sky.”

“I stepped onto the next minute.”

“Where are we going?” Oliver asked.

The Horologist looked at the gauge. “Where all last departures go.”

Oliver hated riddles. He hated them more when they were spoken beside machinery that had no business remaining in one piece. “Name the destination.”

The Horologist’s gentle expression faded. “The place gravity was first taught to kneel.”
