The Body at Two

One night, from the start of the experiment until morning

Qiu Wen’s first test of the blank space succeeds: they remain aware while unable to move or breathe, and a Substitute takes control of their body. In the morning, Wen finds the body unharmed and the camera recording it standing, moving a glass, facing the wall, and smiling at the lens; the purpose of those actions remains unknown.

Wen’s frame-by-frame review reveals faint three-knock patterns during the four minutes their body faced the wall, followed by tiny finger movements that appear to answer them. At the studio, Wen finds three corresponding dents in the paint and hears a live knock from inside the wall before the recording’s next tap plays; they leave without testing what might happen after a fourth knock.
