The Seam Beneath the Smile

Rain polished the streets of Veyr until the city looked dressed for its own funeral. Along the avenue, the Hall of Mirrors blazed with golden windows, each one reflecting a different version of the truth: a bride who had never been abandoned, a merchant who had never cheated, a prince whose hands had never touched blood.

Maeve kept to the alleys behind the Hall, where the rain fell black from the chimneys. Her workshop occupied the cellar of a shuttered bathhouse, beneath a sign that still promised warm water and honest prices. No one came for either.

A woman in a velvet coat waited beneath the stairs. Her garment was magnificent once—silver sleeves embroidered with scenes of happy children, a collar that whispered of a mother’s unending love. Now the fabric had split across the heart. Through the tear showed the ugly gray lining beneath: a truth, coarse and stubborn as sackcloth.

“Can you mend it?” the woman asked.

Maeve touched the rip. The lie-fabric shivered beneath her fingers. “I can mend anything.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Maeve looked up. The woman’s face was powdered, but her eyes were bare. “No,” Maeve said. “It won’t be what it was.”

The woman considered this, then removed a ring and placed it on the table. “Make it something I can wear.”

While Maeve worked, she heard bells ringing aboveground. The Hall of Mirrors had begun its evening appraisal, when the city’s richest citizens brought their garments to be judged for quality and purity. A lie that frayed in public could ruin a family. A lie discovered to be counterfeit could ruin a life.

Three streets away, Isaac held a magnifying lens over the hem of a duke’s coat. Threads of blue fire crawled through the cloth, forming the duke’s childhood memory of generosity. Isaac saw the fraud at once: the fire had been dyed, not spun. Cheap provincial work.

“Impressive,” the duke said. “You found a flaw?”

“Of course not,” Isaac replied, smiling as the Hall expected. “I found an opportunity to improve the weave.”

He marked the coat for private restoration and moved to the next customer. His smile remained fixed. It had been woven into the thin skin around his mouth years ago, when he first became an apprentice. Sometimes, in the mirror behind his desk, he thought he saw another face beneath it—an older boy with mud on his knees, calling for someone who had never come.

Outside, a silent jester danced beneath the Hall’s awning. His costume was made of bright, childish lies: pockets that claimed to hold oceans, buttons insisting they were moons, a red cap embroidered with the promise that every sorrow ended in laughter. He pointed at the Hall, then at the pavement, where a thread of gray truth had washed loose from the gutter.
