That same night

During a routine suspended-tram repair, Merrit finds an unlisted brass phase relay and hears the Orison Engine speak in her childhood voice, asking her to disconnect it. She cuts the relay, but an empty tram begins moving under unauthorized Orison control toward the ruined river viaduct, leaving Merrit trapped aboard while civic investigator Ysabet Rusk orders her to surrender.
