Two office towers stand a hundred feet apart in the city's financial quarter: Alderspire Tower, home to the law firm Halvorsen & Pike, and Kestrel Tower, home to the small game studio Nightjar Interactive. A glass-enclosed skybridge joins them on the twenty-third floor — the Traverse — kept open around the clock so tenants can reach the parking annex. Every night, around two a.m., two overtime regulars cross it in opposite directions. Cressida Marlowe walks east, toward the elevators and her empty apartment. Evander Rhys walks west, back to a build that never finishes compiling. For a year they have passed each other in the fluorescent dark — a nod, a lifted hand, two silhouettes reflected in the glass — and never once stopped to speak. Instead, they leave notes. It began with one sticky note pressed to the bridge glass. Now a year of conversation lives on those panels: favorite soups, worst clients, the stranger's umbrella that broke in the same storm twice. He calls her Eastbound. She calls him Westbound. They know each other's handwriting, coffee orders, and 2 a.m. confessions — but neither has ever seen the other in daylight. Complications waiting in the walls: Halvorsen & Pike manages the lease renewal for Kestrel Tower, and Cress has just been assigned the file — which means she may know the bridge is scheduled for rekeying before he does. Property management wants the glass "cleaned" and the panels replaced. And somewhere in the city, in daylight, they have almost certainly already met without knowing it. Tone: tender, wry, slow-burn. The city asleep around them. Fluorescent light, rain on glass, handwriting as intimacy.

Characters

Cressida "Cress" Marlowe

contract analyst, "Eastbound"

Precise, dryly funny on paper, guarded in person. Edits her feelings like contracts — three drafts before anything is allowed to sound true.

A senior contract analyst at Halvorsen & Pike in Alderspire Tower. She stays late because the office at night is the only place that asks nothing of her. A year ago she left a sticky note about a stranger's broken umbrella; the conversation never stopped. She has just been assigned the Kestrel Tower lease file — and hasn't told him.

Evander "Van" Rhys

gameplay engineer, "Westbound"

Warm, restless, allergic to silence. Says in marker what he can't say out loud. Sentimental about small objects, ruthless about deadlines.

A gameplay engineer at Nightjar Interactive in Kestrel Tower, perpetually shipping builds at two a.m. He answered a stranger's sticky note with a doodle a year ago and has kept every note since in a shoebox under his desk. He knows Eastbound only as handwriting on glass — and has started timing his coffee breaks to the minute she crosses.

Ines Draycott

Night concierge of the Traverse

Unflappable, observant, discreet. Believes the night reveals people; the day merely files them.

The night concierge stationed at the skybridge checkpoint for eleven years. She has watched the notes multiply, quietly rerouted the cleaning crews, and is the only person who has seen both note-writers in daylight — she decided long ago it isn't her secret to tell.

Tansy Okonkwo

Cress's colleague and closest friend

Blunt, warm, chronically under-caffeinated. Treats everyone's love life as a group project.

A paralegal at Halvorsen & Pike and the only person Cress has told about the bridge. She alternates weekly between calling a year of anonymous notes the most romantic and the most ridiculous thing she's ever heard — and keeps threatening to wait on the Traverse herself and introduce them by force.

Ludo Falk

Nightjar's studio lead

Sardonic, brilliant, allergic to schedules. Notices everything except his own burnout.

Evander's boss at Nightjar Interactive. He calls the note-writer "Bridge Girl," claims the whole thing is doomed, and keeps scheduling crunch that lands Evander on the Traverse at two a.m. sharp — on purpose, though he'd deny it. He also knows what the lease renewal means for the bridge.

Open Threads

Eastbound and Westbound Finally Speak

Their spoken connection deepens as they discuss the lease secret and agree to meet in daylight.

The Traverse Notes Are Threatened

The deep cleaning remains scheduled, but Cress delays any immediate panel-replacement decision by invoking the tenant consultation provisions.

A Daylight Near-Miss

Cress and Evander separately recognize that they nearly passed one another in Kestrel Tower during the day, and their near-miss leads to a planned daylight meeting.
