Start reading →In Vaelen, a land trapped beneath endless night and killing frost, survival is never freely given. At the heart of its magic lies an economy of memory: to borrow the power that holds back the dark, someone must surrender a piece of themselves. In the mountain-locked town of Verndall, the last working defense is the Pyre-Chime, kept by a solitary Bellkeeper in the towering Spire of Pyre. Beyond the town, black snow spreads across the Ashen Waste, and the Skahl-skin stalk by the warmth and heartbeat of the living. As the cold closes in and the threat beyond Verndall grows, the Bellkeeper’s duty becomes harder to separate from its cost. The Cinder-Toll of Vaelen is a bleak, intimate fantasy about a town’s fragile safety, a father’s fierce devotion, and what remains when protection demands more than anyone can bear to lose.

Kaelen is Verndall’s current Bellkeeper, living apart from the town in the Spire of Pyre and bearing the burns and calluses of tending the Pyre-Chime. His wife died of illness years ago; at the story’s start, his nine-year-old daughter Elora is the person he most fiercely protects.
Elora
Warm, observant, and brave in the way a child can be, Elora speaks plainly and with quick, curious questions; her sentences are lively, her vocabulary concrete, and she is more likely to say what she
Nine-year-old Elora lives in the shadow of her father’s duty and is one of the few people who can soften the atmosphere of the tower. As the blizzard and horde threaten Verndall, she stays in the Spire and helps Kaelen.
Mayor Oren
Practical and restrained, he speaks plainly and weighs his words before saying anything that might frighten the town.
The mayor responsible for coordinating Verndall's defenses as the black snow advances.
Vey
Blunt and unsentimental, she states the danger directly and does not soften it for comfort.
One of Verndall's elders, familiar with the town's pattern of winter attacks.
