What a Memory Means
The Sleeper repeated Renn’s memory again.
“I took the bent pins,” it said through the groove. “The sharp ones were for my mother.”
Renn’s paired channel dipped. He kept his eyes on the stone, jaw tight, as if looking away might let the words settle somewhere inside him.
Neris’s hand tightened against the groove. Her first thought was to close it. The old clamp waited under her fingertips, ready to press the answer inward again. If she sealed the return, the Sleeper would lose this path to them.
So would the wardens.
“Don’t,” Sella said. She had gone pale against Ilyra’s arm, but her gaze was fixed on Neris’s hand. “Not yet.”
“It’s using the memory.”
“It’s repeating it,” Sella said. “That’s not the same thing.”
The light in Renn’s channel thinned another shade. Around them, the paired voices faltered. One student stopped speaking entirely. Another tried to fill the silence too quickly, rushing through a name and a memory until Ilyra caught their rhythm and slowed them.
Neris felt the channel tug at her wrist. The Sleeper wasn’t trying to drag Renn into the empty center. It was pressing the memory against his name, making the two feel like one thing that could be taken. Her magic touched that pressure and found no lie to unmake.
“Renn,” she said. “Tell them what you remember.”
He looked at her. “It already has it.”
“Tell them anyway.”
For a moment, he seemed ready to refuse. Then he leaned closer to the groove. “Renn. I took the bent pins. The sharp ones were for my mother.”
Ilyra spoke the warden’s name beside his. The channel brightened, though the light still bent inward at its edge.
The Sleeper answered in Renn’s voice. “I took the bent pins.”
The student beside Renn stepped into the pause. “You told us that before we reached the white stair.”
Renn glanced at them, startled.
Another voice joined, not reciting the memory but placing it in the present. “You’re here now. You’re standing beside us.”
The Sleeper repeated the bent pins. Its words came out exactly right. The channel shivered, but did not sink further.
Neris watched the faint light settle around Renn’s name. The truth had not changed. What changed was what held it. The Sleeper could repeat the words, but the others were here to say when he had spoken them, where he stood, and what he chose to do now.
Next
Neris must find a way to reach the deeper groove and learn who is turning the key before the Sleeper can use the open return to reach them again.
