The Second Instruction
The second instruction arrived without sound.
Every instrument in the observatory leaned toward the floor.
Not physically. The gravimeters remained bolted to their granite platforms, their housings level within a tolerance of three microns. But their readings descended together, a clean and impossible step: 0.998041G, 0.998040, 0.998039. The numbers fell in a rhythm too deliberate to be drift.
Claire watched the monitor. “It’s not a pressure event.”
Marcus stood behind her, one hand braced against the console. “You said that last time.”
“Last time the field moved outward from a point. This is a gradient.”
“A gradient toward what?”
She did not answer. Her eyes tracked the four independent instruments. The difference between them was tiny—less than a millionth of a G—but the pattern formed a line through the observatory, from the archive room to the oldest gravimeter in the building.
On the other side of the connection, Julian breathed into his microphone. “Claire, I’m seeing the same thing in the global model.”
“Can you resolve the vector?”
“Already did. Don’t be impressed; I’m terrified, which is when I do my best work.”
A wire-frame Earth spun across the auxiliary display. The Eye’s outline had vanished from the map. In its place, a narrow black line passed through the planet, entering at the observatory and extending downward at an angle no natural field could sustain.
Julian overlaid the line with the bedrock survey beneath Tokyo. “It terminates here.”
A red point appeared beneath the building, approximately sixty-three meters below the foundation.
Marcus gave a humorless laugh. “There’s nothing there.”
“There’s supposed to be nothing there,” Julian corrected. “The geological survey says basalt and compacted sediment.”
Claire had already opened the original archive. The file fought her. Its timestamp flickered between 2047-03-18 09:14:02 and a sequence of dates that had not yet occurred. Every time she forced the record open, the first anomaly—the one she had personally detected—shifted by another fraction of a second.
Then the corrupted line stabilized.
BENEATH THE FIRST WEIGHT.
The words did not appear in any language file. They were assembled from the archive’s own metadata, letters pulled from instrument labels and operator notes. Claire stared at them until the meaning settled into her mind.
“First weight?” Marcus asked.
“The first measurement,” she said. “The original calibration.”
She ran to the archive room. Marcus followed, swearing softly as the corridor lights dimmed behind them. Julian remained in their ears, talking too quickly as he tried to trace the subsurface point against old construction records.
The archive held six decades of physical records: magnetic tapes, ceramic memory wafers, paper logs sealed against humidity. Claire ignored them all and went to a locked drawer beneath the first gravimeter she had used in 2047. The drawer contained the reference mass, a platinum-iridium cylinder kept in a shockproof case.
She lifted it.
The stone shelf beneath was warm.
Claire froze. “Marcus.”
He touched the surface and pulled his hand back. “That’s impossible.”
A hairline crack ran through the granite, perfectly straight. It had not been there an hour ago. From below came a faint metallic tapping, regular as a clock.
Julian’s voice sharpened. “The point just changed.”
“To where?” Claire asked.
“Not where. When.”
The archive terminal behind them lit without being touched. A new record appeared, dated eighteen hours in the future. Its author field read: DR. CLAIRE HARLOW.
Marcus stepped toward it. “You haven’t written that.”
“No.”
The tapping beneath the shelf stopped.
For one breath, the observatory was silent. Then the reference mass in Claire’s hand grew heavy enough to bend her wrist. The floor dipped beneath her shoes. Somewhere below the building, stone groaned and folded—not breaking, but making room.
The crack widened.
A cold blue light rose through it, illuminating the dust beneath the shelf. In that light, Claire saw a shape that could not have been part of the foundation: a narrow shaft descending into darkness, its walls marked with concentric rings.
The Eye had not been looking at the observatory.
It had been looking through it.
On the terminal, the future-dated file opened by itself. There was only one line of text.
DO NOT LET IT SEE THE THIRD.
With a blue-lit shaft opening beneath the observatory, Claire must discover what the warning’s “third” refers to—and why a future version of herself has already written it.
