Chapter 9 of 47·5 min read·The next several minutes
The Second Down
The pull began with the dust.
It lifted from the chamber floor in thin strands and hung at Claire’s knee height. The grains did not rise toward the ceiling or settle toward the floor. They drifted sideways, toward the place where the Tokyo Observatory mass had vanished, then curved downward through the black stone.
Marcus watched them go. He was still bent over, one hand pressed to his chest. The crack in his mass had widened, and a dull gray light showed through it.
“Is that coming from you?” Claire asked.
“I’d prefer not to find out.” He straightened by degrees. “How bad is it?”
Claire looked at the masses around them. Most had rebounded from their slits and now hung at uneven angles. Several had struck the unseen floor hard enough to dent their surfaces. The chamber’s rows no longer extended into the distance. The darkness had compressed, drawing the far walls closer until the nearest masses seemed arranged around a single opening.
“Bad enough that the chamber changed shape,” she said.
“That’s not a measurement.”
“It’s the one I have.”
The blue filament lay across her palm. It had gone thin and rigid, pointing through the floor. Beneath it, the pressure continued to build. The pull had a direction, but not a stable one. It shifted every few seconds by a fraction of a degree, tracing a slow spiral below them.
Julian’s voice returned through the filament, broken by static. “Claire, I need you to confirm whether you’re still in the chamber.”
“I’m here.”
“Good. I have bad news and slightly different bad news.”
Marcus gave a humorless laugh. “You’ve always known how to prioritize.”
“The second center is moving.” Julian paused while keys clicked in the background. “Not across the planet. It’s oscillating beneath Tokyo. Six kilometers east, then eleven west. The depth is changing too.”
“How deep?” Claire asked.
“Initially, mantle boundary. Now it’s shallower. It rose twelve kilometers in the last ninety seconds.”
Claire looked down at the filament. “It’s coming toward us.”
“No. That’s the problem. It’s not coming toward the observatory. The observatory is moving toward it.”
The chamber floor tilted.
Marcus caught the edge of a slit. Claire dropped to one knee, and the filament pulled against her hand with enough force to stretch the skin across her knuckles. The named masses swung in their restraints. For an instant, the one engraved MARCUS COLE turned fully toward him.
Next
As the original reference mass reaches the shaft, the doorway beneath the chamber begins to open onto whatever is answering from below.
This time the image inside showed no landscape. Claire saw a narrow room lined with instruments, a younger Marcus standing before a screen. On the screen was the Eye, but its pupil had been reduced to a single white point. Beside him stood Nora, though Claire had never seen them together in that room. Nora held a paper folder and was saying something Marcus could not hear.
Marcus stared at the mass. “That never happened.”
“Not to you,” Claire said.
His expression hardened. “Don’t start making distinctions you can’t prove.”
The figure with Claire’s face stood beyond the dividing line, one hand braced against the wall. It no longer appeared solid. Its outline broke into horizontal bands, each displaced slightly from the next.
“You denied the account,” it said. “The account remains open.”
“Then close it,” Claire said.
“I cannot.”
The admission crossed the chamber more sharply than any command. Marcus looked at the figure. Claire did not. She kept her attention on the filament and on the changing angle of the pull beneath them.
“What did we open?” Marcus asked.
The figure’s face flickered through expressions Claire recognized and others she did not. “A response.”
“To what?”
“To an absence.”
The chamber lurched again. One of the smaller masses tore free of its restraint and shot across the room. It struck the wall beside the figure, leaving a shallow crater. The figure did not flinch, but its outline lost another band.
Claire understood that the release had not destroyed the calibration system. It had removed its balance. The named masses were no longer being held as records. They were becoming loose weights, and something beneath Earth was taking them into account.
“Julian,” she said, “are you still receiving the filament?”
“Barely. The signal is changing frequency. Claire, the center has produced a surface effect.”
“What kind?”
“Tokyo’s local vertical just rotated. Three degrees in under a minute.”
Marcus grabbed the wall. “That’s impossible.”
“That has become a less useful objection,” Julian said. “Also, there are reports from three coastal stations. Water is moving uphill.”
A second voice entered the channel, faint but clear enough to identify. Nora.
“Julian, stop broadcasting raw figures. The military is listening.”
“Then they can enjoy the math.”
“Nora,” Claire said. “Where are you?”
“Above ground. I’m at the western access road with two observatory technicians and a van that has decided one wheel is optional.” Her voice shook only when she spoke quickly. “The building is intact, but the ground around it isn’t. The old service tunnel has collapsed. We can’t reach you from this side.”
Claire closed her fingers around the filament. “Can you reach the original gravimeter?”
“If the floor doesn’t move again.”
“It will.”
“Excellent. I was worried the day might improve.”
Claire heard metal clatter through Nora’s connection, then a distant groan from the observatory structure. The sound passed into the chamber as a vibration. Dust rose from the floor and streamed toward the filament.
“Get the reference mass,” Claire said. “Not the filament. The mass itself.”
“It’s in the calibration room.”
“Bring it to the shaft.”
Julian interrupted. “Why?”
“Because the second center is answering the first weight. If the original mass is still connected to this chamber, it may be the only thing that can give us a stable direction.”
“You said the Tokyo mass reached the new center.”
“It did. That doesn’t mean the connection ended.”
Marcus turned toward her. “You want to pull it back?”
“No.” She looked at the black opening beneath the chamber. “I want to know what is pulling.”
The figure raised its head. “Recognition is not required.”
Claire faced it at last. “You keep saying that.”
“Because you continue to mistake refusal for escape.”
“Maybe they’re different.”
The figure’s face settled into Claire’s own, older and exhausted. “If the second center reaches the surface, the gaze will have a point of entry.”
Claire felt Marcus stiffen beside her. The warning sounded like a threat, but the figure had said it with fear. That distinction mattered.
“How long?” Claire asked.
“Until the answer arrives.”
The filament snapped taut. The floor beneath Claire split along a perfect circular line. No light came from the opening. Instead, the chamber’s gravity reversed around its edge. The loose dust fell upward into the dark, followed by fragments of platinum-iridium and, slowly, Marcus’s mass.
Marcus reached for it.
Claire caught his wrist. “Don’t.”
“That’s my name.”
“It’s not you.”
The mass rose another meter. Its crack widened, and the younger Marcus inside the image turned toward them. His mouth formed a warning, but no sound crossed the chamber.
Above, Nora shouted over the channel. “Claire, we have the reference mass. The shaft is opening.”
Every suspended object in the chamber stopped.
Julian’s voice came next, stripped of its usual humor. “The second center just stopped moving.”
Claire watched Marcus’s mass hang over the opening. The gray light within it had changed to blue, the same color as the filament in her hand.
“What is it doing?” she asked.
Julian answered after a long silence. “It’s looking back.”
The circle in the floor widened, and something from beneath Tokyo began to rise—not a mass, not a body, but a precise absence in the shape of a doorway.
