Chapters

  1. Chapter21

    The Archive of First Names

    The same night

The fire-blackened key opens the buried archive, where Isaac and Elias find the original records defining them as “absent” and “removed.” Maeve and the divided bearers force the archive to reveal both its gold rewritings and red underlinings, but a voice trapped inside the ledger asks which child the Director left in the fire.

  2. Chapter22

    The Name That Was Left

    That same moment

The central ledger reveals that the “child left in the fire” was the young Mirror-Masked Director, whose original name was abandoned and later replaced. The Coat-Child is revealed as having been assembled from what the Director’s lost name could not contain, and the root opens a stair beneath the archive, calling the remainder home.

  3. Chapter23

    The Stair of Returning Names

    That same night

The root demands that the Coat-Child choose whether to return, and the child agrees only on the condition that it will not be restored as an object. The tether divides into parallel paths as Maeve, Isaac, Elias, the Director, and the Child Beneath the Bed descend, while Jester guides the Coat-Child down a separate black stair; the Director’s abandoned name is revealed as Anna, though the archive still conceals its ending.

  4. Chapter24

    What Anna Left Behind

    That same descent

The group reaches a landing where the root demands the Director’s mask and the identity beneath it. The Director removes the mask, revealing the burned face of the child left in the doorway, while Isaac retrieves a red name-fragment marked ANNA before the root takes both into the chamber below. The ledger then changes its demand: they must bring the one who was chosen, leaving uncertain whether it means the Coat-Child, the Director, or someone else preserved by the Hall.

  5. Chapter25

    The Child Who Was Chosen

    A few minutes later

The root clarifies that it wants the chosen child brought to the place where her public name was given. Maeve realizes she was the child Anna selected to return to the city, while the other Liora was hidden below, and she chooses to enter the root’s doorway without surrendering the divided tether. The group follows as the root reveals an untouched first dressing room from before the Hall’s fire.

  6. Chapter26

    The Name Beneath the Gold

The same moment, continuing into the next few minutes

Maeve enters the preserved first dressing room and forces the Director to admit that she chose Maeve because Maeve reached for rescue, while the other Liora reached toward the names in the fire. Maeve stitches the red name Liora through the gold identity Annelise, causing the Hall’s hidden truths to surface without erasing its public lives—but a new mirror-door reveals another erased record and a man who calls Isaac “brother.”

  7. Chapter27

    The Brother in Silver

    Moments after Chapter 26

Maeve catches Isaac’s tether and follows the silver appraiser into the exposed upper Hall. The stranger is revealed as Jonas Vale, a third brother whom Elias carried from the original fire and the Hall later retained and erased; Maeve forces Isaac, Elias, and Jonas to speak their red records publicly, breaking the Hall’s attempt to remove Jonas. A black door bearing all three brothers’ names opens, and the Director admits that the rest of Anna is behind it.

  8. Chapter28

    The Name Anna Left Behind

    Moments after Chapter 27

Maeve opens the brothers’ door and discovers that Anna’s abandoned name is Anna Vale, preserved as a burned child-self rather than erased. Anna reveals that she rescued names from the original fire and hid one more identity beneath the root; when the tether joins them, the root begins exposing a new name beneath Liora—one the Hall still knows.

  9. Chapter29

    The Witness Beneath the Name

    That same moment

The root reveals that the hidden identity beneath Liora is the WITNESS: the Child Beneath the Bed, preserved by the Hall because she remembered its original rewriting. Her testimony identifies an even deeper place, the Underhall, where the first garments and unburned names were hidden; Maeve chooses to descend with her rather than let the Director control what is revealed.

  10. Chapter30

    The First Truth

The same descent, moments after Chapter 29

Maeve and the Witness open the Underhall only after choosing a first truth together: the Hall took the rescued children’s names before they could give them, and replaced them with assigned identities. The record spreads through the city without erasing its public garments, while the Underhall reveals a ledger and hundreds of original garments that will determine what truth comes next.
