Start reading →The West is expanding beneath a sky crowded with omens. Trains carry settlers, soldiers, fortune-seekers—and creatures forced into the margins of human civilization. Harpies deliver the mail, centaurs are bought and sold as living transportation, and monster communities survive through uneasy treaties, theft, or open resistance. Magic exists too, though those who wield it are feared, hunted, and rarely free of its price. Evelyn boards a westbound train with a pistol she barely trusts and a secret she does not understand. Her journey is interrupted when a pale, painted rider begins closing in—and a band of monstrous outlaws attacks the train in pursuit of the same fugitive witch. Among the chaos are a dangerous naga with a cause, and a undead lawman preserved as a vampire who still believes morality is a choice. As the rails carry Evelyn toward a town built by displaced monsters, desire, suspicion, and old violence draw her between two very different men. To survive the journey, she must decide what kind of woman—and what kind of witch—she is willing to become.
Evelyn
Anxious but outspoken, proper by the standards of her time, compassionate, inexperienced, and more stubborn than she realizes.
Evelyn comes from a human family whose witchcraft was purchased through a demonic bargain, though her late brother kept that history from her. Newly alone after his death, she is traveling west with an unreliable pistol, uncontrolled magic, and a supernatural pursuer who has marked her as the family’s final sacrifice.
Vincent Ridgestone
Controlled, weary, principled, self-denying, and quietly compassionate beneath an intimidating reserve.
Vincent died in battle and was saved from death by a vampire, leaving him pale, slightly stubbled, and bound to an existence he despises. He drinks only from carefully chosen people or criminals and uses a duster and broad-brimmed hat to guard against the sun; having tracked a witch west, he boards Evelyn’s train just as Mateo’s gang attacks, hoping to persuade her that what she is, does not dictate what she does.
Mateo
Dangerous, magnetic, fiercely loyal, politically shrewd, and capable of turning charm into a weapon.
Mateo has a brown human torso, long black hair, and the powerful, diamondback-patterned body of a western rattlesnake. He leads a gang of monsters—including a chupacabra, a Native American harpy, and other naga—whose thefts help sustain a town built by displaced monster-kind; he wants Evelyn to join them and use her magic to make the community independent.
The Pale Rider
Implacable, formal, patient, and frighteningly literal, with the cold discipline of a bureaucrat carrying out sacred law.
The Pale Rider has pitch-black skin, glowing eyes, and a face painted like a Mexican Day of the Dead sugar skull. Dressed in white with orange detailing on his sombrero and poncho, he has been assigned to collect Evelyn’s soul—but on the mortal plane, even a demon must obey rules. He has no name and is only called the pale rider.
Elias Vale
Formal, implacable, patient, and frighteningly literal.
A demonic soul-collector assigned to fulfill the contract attached to Evelyn’s family.
The Coyote
Amused, predatory, observant, and fond of turning warnings into bargains
A fae creature that wears the shape of an oversized coyote and travels roads claimed by neither settlers nor monsters. It knows old rules about names, invitations, and magical thresholds.
