Evelyn’s westbound train is attacked by Mateo’s monster outlaws, who seek to take her from the Pale Rider pursuing her. Her frightened magic shatters the carriage window and marks her location, while Marshal Vincent reveals that the collector is bound by rules; Evelyn chooses to leave with Mateo despite Vincent’s warning.

The Road That Lied

That same night, from Mercy Junction to the first camp west

Mateo gets Evelyn away from the train and reveals that “Elias Vale” is only a mortal record-name; the demon’s true name remains unknown and therefore unbindable. A coyote-like fae warns Evelyn not to answer the Pale Rider in her own voice, while Mateo sacrifices the wagon to create a false trail; Evelyn chooses to remain with his people despite his offer to take her back toward Vincent.
