At the junction of Route 77 and an unmarked spur road in the Nevada desert sits the Nightjar Fuel & Fry — six pumps, a convenience store, and a diner that has served coffee since 1959. The nearest town is forty miles away. The night shift runs 11 PM to 7 AM, and every new hire gets the same orientation: a laminated card of rules, a warning to follow them exactly, and no explanation. Odessa Larkin took the job because it paid cash and nobody asked questions. On her first night, taped inside the register drawer, she found the card: 1. The coffee machine is never empty. If it is, leave the building. Do not restock it. 2. A man in a silver suit will ask for a map to Mercy. There is no Mercy on any map. Sell him the one in the third drawer. Do not let him pay. 3. Between 3:33 and 3:41 AM the pumps are closed. Anyone fueling during that window is not a customer. Do not look at their faces. They know when you look. 4. If the lot lights go out, get behind the counter and count to sixty. Do not open the door, no matter what it sounds like out there. It learns voices. 5. Mrs. Gable comes in at 4 AM for a scratch ticket. She pays with old coins. Always let her win. She has never lost, and the one night she might is a night you do not want to work. 6. If a customer asks you to look under their hood, your shift is over. Clock out. Walk home. Do not drive. 7. The phone rings at 2:22 AM. Answer it, say "we're closed," hang up. If it rings twice — do not answer. If it rings three times, you have already gotten something wrong tonight. Recount the till until you find it. 8. Never follow a customer into the desert. No matter what they're carrying. No matter who they're carrying. The previous night clerk annotated the card in red pen — corrections, additions, a desperate scrawl in the margin that reads only: THE LIST CHANGES. COUNT THE RULES. Odessa counted. There were eight rules yesterday. Tonight there are nine. The Nightjar is not haunted. It is a checkpoint — a toll booth on a road far older than the highway — and the rules are not superstition. They are a treaty. And something on the other side has started renegotiating.
Odessa "Dess" Larkin
Quick-witted, poker-faced, constitutionally unable to leave a bad hand alone. A former Vegas blackjack dealer — she reads people for a living, which is exactly the skill this job punishes.
Left Las Vegas with a duffel bag and a dealer's license she can't use anymore. She tells people she's "between things." The truth involves a count room, a borrowed car, and a man who keeps calling from a new number.
Euphemia "Femmie" Goode
Warm, unhurried, and absolutely flinty underneath; she pours coffee like communion.
Femmie trained four night clerks. Three left. One is the handwriting in the margins. She knows the rules are a covenant older than the building, but she obeys the covenant's own first law: you cannot tell a clerk, the clerk has to learn. She feeds Dess pie and watches her count the rules.
Royale "Roy" Bibb
Affable, harried, always mid-departure; a man leaving a room even while standing still.
Managed the Nightjar for nine years without a single incident, a record nobody can explain. His notes in the register margins are the closest thing Dess has to a manual — and his final note, dated the day he vanished, is a grocery list where every item is a warning.

Hollis Creed
Salt-of-the-earth, unshakeable, talks like a man with nowhere to be for a hundred years.
Hollis has fueled at the Nightjar every night Dess has worked — always during the legal window, always paying cash, always the only vehicle in the lot whose headlights point both directions when he leaves. He is Dess's one reliable source of information, and she has started to suspect his kindness is itself a rule being followed.
Sheriff Talmadge Rook
Courtly, tired, professionally incurious about the wrong things.
Investigating — officially — a string of abandoned vehicles along the spur road. Unofficially, he has spent twenty years making sure paperwork never points at the Nightjar. He tells Dess to quit every visit without once saying why, and he will not step past the pumps.
Mrs. Gable
Sweet, vague, precise about exactly one thing: her ticket.
Pays in coins from before Dess was born, wins every night, and pockets the prize without scratching — she checks the ticket by touch. Femmie believes Mrs. Gable's nightly win is what's holding the treaty together, that the ticket isn't gambling but tallying. Nobody knows what she is. Nobody asks. Rule 5 exists because someone once asked.
The Counterman
Patient, courteous, interested.
It looks like a customer in the half-second before you actually look. It asks questions — small ones — and every answer it receives lets it edit the list. It is the source of the new ninth rule. Femmie has met it once before, forty years ago, on the last night the list changed.
Tessa Quill
Precise, procedural, unsympathetic to ordinary identities, and alert to distinctions the treaty can record.
A clerk stationed at the older tollhouse beyond the Nightjar, Tessa sorts next receipts and preserves the road’s records of abandoned roles and unpaid passages.
