The Ninth Rule

One night, from 11:07 p.m. to shortly after 3:33 a.m.

On Odessa’s third night at the Nightjar, a ninth rule appears: she must give the Counterman the true number when he asks who is keeping count. After surviving the darkened lot and hearing voices imitate Roy and Femmie, Odessa lies that there are eight rules—but the Counterman’s smile and the pouring coffee suggest the lie has changed something.

The Tenth Cup

The same night, from shortly after 2:22 AM until the next few minutes

The Counterman’s coffee continues appearing from an impossible source, and the third phone call brings a warning in Roy Bibb’s voice. The ninth rule changes to punish Odessa’s lie, a tenth rule appears forbidding Roy from entering, and a Roy-shaped presence emerges from the stockroom to ask who is keeping count.

The One Who Counts

The final minutes before 4 AM

Odessa realizes the treaty counts not only rules and cups, but the person who answers the Counterman. She answers, “Ten. And you are,” causing the Roy-shaped entity to collapse and an eleventh rule to appear: the one who answers owes the next cup. A double of Odessa remains behind her and drinks from the impossible cup.

The Cup That Waited

That same night, from shortly after 2:22 AM to the beginning of the next hour

Odessa discovers that the eleventh rule makes her responsible for serving a cup, while a red-ink addition warns that the cup already held by her double does not count. When the phone rings three times, the lights fail and the duplicate begins demanding release. Odessa counts the till and finds a strange coin bearing a doorway, just as something in the stockroom wearing Roy’s voice calls for the next cup.

The Cup for the Uncounted

The next several minutes

Odessa counts the till and learns that the owed cup belongs to a party who was counted but never arrived, not to her duplicate or necessarily to Roy. The doorway coin opens a red threshold to a booth beneath an impossible highway sign, where a figure bearing Odessa’s face waits behind glass.

The Seat That Was Empty

That same night, moments after the red threshold opens

Odessa confronts her duplicate in the impossible booth and learns that the owed cup belongs to someone counted under the wrong name, not to the duplicate. The booth reveals the names Gable and Royale Bibb before Roy appears on the impossible road carrying a sealed cup and something alive beneath a gray towel.

The Party Under the Cloth

From 2:22 AM until shortly after 2:30 AM

Odessa answers the 2:22 phone call and survives the three-ring blackout by counting the till, while the Counterman’s twelfth rule clarifies that Roy is only carrying the owed cup, not its recipient. She recognizes the breathing figure beneath the gray cloth as another, marked version of herself and deliberately places the cup beyond the threshold, forcing the absent party to attempt arrival. A new qualification appears: anyone who reaches for the cup must be allowed to arrive.

The Party Arrives

A few minutes later, still during the same night shift

Odessa opens the Nightjar’s door and allows the gray-wrapped, numbered party to arrive, satisfying the new qualification but creating a thirteenth rule: an arrived party may not be sent back. The party identifies itself as having been counted under Royale Bibb’s name, and Odessa forcibly takes the splitting cup from Roy; its contents merge with the numbered figure, leaving Roy collapsed outside and the entity inside the store. When it asks who is keeping count, Odessa refuses to answer.

The Count That Answered

The same night, from shortly before 4 AM until dawn approaches

Odessa serves the arrived party coffee, but its repeated question causes the treaty to add a fourteenth rule allowing the count to name its keeper, provided that keeper is present. During the blackout triggered by the third phone ring, Odessa discovers that counting the till can delay the rule’s completion, but the new rule names Odessa as keeper; Mrs. Gable arrives and warns her to make the party name itself before dawn.

The Name Beneath the Name

The final minutes before dawn

Odessa forces the gray-wrapped party to distinguish its true identity from the name beneath which it was counted. It names itself the remainder of Odessa Larkin—the keeper who was left out—but the Counterman adds a new rule allowing the remainder to replace the keeper. Odessa rejects the Counterman’s claim and enters the impossible threshold to confront Roy, who is poised to finish writing her name in the ledger.
