Chapter 8 of 51·6 min read·A few minutes later, still during the same night shift
The Party Arrives
The thing outside struck the pavement again. The sound came through the glass as a blunt, measured knock, though the front door stood between them and the pumps.
Odessa kept one hand on the register drawer. The laminated card lay beside it, Rule Twelve still wet-looking beneath the others.
THE PARTY WHO REACHES FOR THE CUP MUST BE ALLOWED TO ARRIVE.
“What counts as arriving?” she asked.
Femmie stayed behind the counter. Her face had gone slack around the mouth, but her hands were steady as she moved the coffee pot away from the edge. “At the place it was called to.”
“That’s the Nightjar.”
“No.” Femmie pointed toward the red-dark pavement beyond the windows. “That is where the cup is. The Nightjar is behind the threshold.”
The thing struck the ground a third time. Roy’s body jerked with the impact. He still held the torn cup, though its split seam had widened from rim to base. Something pale pressed inside the opening. It looked at first like a folded napkin. Then it bent one joint.
Odessa’s mouth dried. “If I open the door, it comes in.”
“If you don’t, the rule has been broken.”
“And what happens then?”
Femmie looked at the card instead of her. “The list corrects the error.”
That answer was not enough. Femmie knew it, and the old woman’s refusal to add anything made it worse. Odessa had spent years at blackjack tables learning when a player was hiding a weak hand. Femmie was not hiding weakness. She was refusing to show Odessa which loss she had already accepted.
Outside, Roy turned his head toward the store. “Dess.” His voice carried cleanly through the closed door. “You said it could come.”
“I said nothing to you.”
The wrapped figure lifted one arm. Gray cloth hung from its elbow. Its fingers reached across the pavement toward the cup Odessa had set between the threshold and the pumps. The arm lengthened by several inches without the shoulder moving.
Femmie gripped the counter. “Open it.”
Odessa glanced at the front door. The ordinary lock sat below the push bar. She had used it hundreds of times. Customers came in for cigarettes, lottery tickets, and breakfast burritos that had been sweating under plastic since midnight. The door had never been anything but a door.
That was no longer true, but the handle remained ordinary beneath her palm.
She pressed the bar.
Next
With the counted party trapped inside and Roy outside the threshold, Odessa must decide whether silence can survive the Nightjar’s accounting—or whether the thirteenth rule has already made her the next name on the list.
The door opened inward. Desert heat entered first, carrying dust and the smell of hot metal. The pumps stood beyond the awning, their numbers black against yellow panels. Roy was six paces away. The red line between the pavement and the store ran under his shoes, then ended at the open doorway.
“Come to the cup,” Odessa said.
The wrapped figure stopped reaching.
“I’m allowing you to arrive,” she added. “Not inviting you to stay.”
Roy’s face tightened. “Don’t phrase it twice.”
“I phrase what I mean.”
The gray-wrapped party moved.
It did not walk like Odessa. Her left foot had always turned slightly outward from an old ankle injury. This thing placed each foot exactly where the last had been, dragging the soles over the asphalt. It reached the cup and bent over it. The cloth fell from its head.
Odessa saw her own face, but the resemblance ended at the skin. Black numbers covered the cheeks, throat, and forehead in columns so dense they seemed to have been written beneath the flesh. The marks crossed the eyes without obscuring them. One column began at the hairline and descended to the mouth: 9, 10, 11, 12. Beside twelve, someone had drawn a small doorway.
The figure picked up the cup.
Nothing happened.
Then the red line under Roy’s feet brightened, and the store’s lights dimmed. The figure stepped toward the open door. Roy caught its sleeve.
“Not yet,” he said.
The figure turned its numbered face toward him. “Carrier.”
Roy’s grip loosened.
“What’s in your cup?” Odessa asked.
Roy looked down. The split had opened wide enough for her to see inside. No coffee showed through the gap. A pale, wet fold pushed against the paper, followed by a thin strand of black hair. Roy pulled the cup to his chest.
“The remainder,” he said.
“Of what?”
“Of the name.”
The wrapped party stepped into the red line. The threshold did not resist it. The figure’s bare foot crossed first, and the doorway coin in Odessa’s pocket grew hot against her hip. She moved backward, keeping the counter between herself and the entrance.
Femmie reached for the heavy coffee urn. “You have arrived. Stop there.”
The figure did not stop. It entered the Nightjar and stood just inside the door, dripping no water or blood, though the gray cloth clung to it as if soaked. The smell around it was paper, dust, and the sour trace of old pennies.
Odessa pointed at the cup. “You reached for it. You arrived. Take it and leave.”
The figure tilted its head. “The cup is owed.”
“To you?”
It looked down at its marked hands. “To the party counted beneath the wrong name.”
Femmie made a sound under her breath. “Don’t ask it to identify itself.”
But Odessa had already heard the answer she needed. The creature was not claiming to be Odessa. It was claiming the entry beneath Odessa’s name.
“Then what name were you counted under?” Odessa asked.
The figure’s mouth opened. The voice that came out belonged to no one Odessa knew. It had the flat tone of an automated announcement, though each word seemed spoken close to her ear.
“Royale Bibb.”
Roy flinched. The object inside his torn cup shoved upward. A small hand emerged, gray at the knuckles and marked with the same cramped numerals.
Femmie stepped away from him. “He was the wrong name.”
Odessa looked at the flyer beneath the register. Roy’s photograph. Her name printed below it. Sheriff Rook had brought her the paper because he believed it concerned Roy. The list had not made a simple mistake. It had moved the names around until each person could be used as evidence for another.
The marked party held out the cup.
Odessa did not take it. “It belongs to you.”
“No,” the figure said. “You owe the serving.”
The words changed the room. The coffee machine began to hiss though its reservoir remained empty. Behind the counter, the card lifted at one corner. Ink appeared beneath Rule Twelve, writing itself in a cramped red hand.
THE CLERK MUST SERVE THE PARTY UPON ARRIVAL.
Femmie caught the card and slapped her palm over the fresh line. “No.”
The figure turned toward her. Its expression did not alter, but the numbers on its face shifted. One column vanished. Another began to form.
“Femmie,” Odessa said, “get the cup.”
“I’m not touching it.”
“Not that one. Roy’s.”
Roy backed toward the pumps. The hand inside his split cup had reached the rim. Its fingers curled over the paper. A second hand pressed beside it.
“You can’t serve what’s still being carried,” Odessa said. “The rule says the party must be served upon arrival. It doesn’t say the carrier gets to keep carrying.”
Roy shook his head. “Dess, listen to me. If this opens here—”
“It already opened.”
She stepped through the doorway and onto the red line. Heat rose from the pavement. The marked party remained inside the store, holding its cup and watching her. Roy stood beyond the pumps, the torn cup clutched against his ribs.
Odessa reached for him.
Not his hand. The cup.
Roy pulled back, but the thing inside had hooked its fingers over the rim. The paper tore. A strip of writing appeared along the break in tall, familiar letters.
ODESSA LARKIN.
Roy’s face collapsed into something tired and almost human. “That is what it wants you to serve.”
Odessa seized the cup.
The contents spilled upward rather than down. Gray cloth, black hair, and a spray of wet paper unfolded between them. The shape struck Odessa’s chest with enough force to drive her against the doorframe. She saw a mouth opening where no face should have been, and heard her own voice say, “We’re closed.”
Then the marked party crossed the threshold behind her.
It placed one hand on the thing emerging from Roy’s cup. The two shapes joined with a sound like a receipt being torn from a roll. The creature’s face stretched, numbers running together across its skin. For an instant Odessa saw all three versions at once: the figure beneath the cloth, the duplicate from the booth, and herself reflected in the dark window.
The cup fell empty to the pavement.
Inside the store, the card settled flat. Rule Twelve remained. The new line beneath it had vanished.
In its place, written in black, was a thirteenth rule.
THE PARTY WHO HAS ARRIVED MAY NOT BE SENT BACK.
The marked figure stood beside Odessa, no longer holding a cup. Its face had become less like hers. The scar beneath its brow was gone. Its eyes remained the same.
Roy was on his knees by the pumps. The empty paper cup rolled until it touched the red line.
“Who is keeping count?” the figure asked.
Odessa looked through the open door at Femmie, at the rule card, and at the doorway coin burning against her hip.
