Return to Sender
The ledger did not move again until Iris asked it a question.
“What are you returning?”
Ruth looked up from her notebook. “You think it’s going to answer?”
“I think it has already answered badly. I’m trying a shorter question.”
Agnes stood across the table, her hands folded. “Be careful what you call an answer.”
Iris kept her eyes on the words OWNER RETURN. “I’m asking the ledger, not you.”
Her father shifted beside the wall. Tomás stayed near the door, his camera lowered. The chair beside the table remained empty. Iris had placed the strip face up beside the recovered photograph; neither had been signed or returned to the binding.
The ledger’s cover gave a small click.
A sheet eased out from between its pages. It was thicker than the strip, yellow at the edges, with two vertical creases pressed into it. Iris let it settle before she reached for it. No one else moved.
At the top, in the archive’s blunt type, it read: RETURN OF OWNER.
Below that: PROPERTY: CALLOWAY & SONS.
Iris read on. “From: Iris Calloway. To: Edwin Calloway.”
Her father’s face went still.
The last line was shorter. ACCEPTANCE: WITNESSED.
“So it wants the transfer reversed,” Ruth said.
“It’s proposing one,” Iris replied. She looked at Agnes. “That isn’t the same thing.”
“No,” Agnes said. “It isn’t.”
“Is this what the archive meant when it received the papers?”
“I can’t say. Receipt and acceptance are separate entries. This form is asking for something else.” Agnes didn’t look away from the page. “A return, witnessed by someone.”
“Someone the archive chooses?”
“It hasn’t chosen anyone yet.”
Iris looked at the blank line beneath ACCEPTANCE. It was sized for a signature. The archive had put her name on one side and her father’s on the other, as if the distance between them were a clerical error that could be closed with a pen.
Her father came forward. He stopped short of the table. “If it’s asking for the house, I’ll take it back.”
“You don’t know what it’s asking for beyond what’s on that page.”
“I know it’s my name there.”
“It’s your name because you signed the transfer.”

The ledger has marked Edwin as a present but unconfirmed transferor; Iris must learn whether refusing the return will make him the pending subject.
