The Witness Line
Iris set the OWNER WITNESS page beside the ledger and read the line for the fourth time.
“I attest that the named return subject accepted in my presence.”
Below it, the signature space waited. Above it, the ledger still named Edwin Calloway as the pending subject. His identity remained unconfirmed.
“What part is mine?” she asked Agnes.
Agnes stood across the table, hands folded over her coat. “The form says what it says.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No,” Agnes said. Her eyes stayed on the page. “It isn’t.”
Ruth had her notebook open beside the ledger. She wrote down the wording, then glanced at Iris. “You’ve already recorded that he’s physically here. The record took that.”
“It took it as presence,” Iris said. “It didn’t take it as identity.”
“Correct,” Agnes said. “Those are separate entries.”
The answer settled nothing. Iris turned the page toward Agnes. “And this one?”
Agnes leaned closer. A faint crease crossed her brow. “It asks you to witness his acceptance. It does not ask you to accept on his behalf.”
“So I attest that he’s the person named, and that he accepted the return.”
“If he does.”
Tomás stood near the lobby door, his camera still lowered at his side. “And if she signs without that?”
Agnes lifted her gaze to him. “Then she would be recording something she did not witness.”
Ruth’s pen paused. “That sounds like the sort of thing I can put in an incident report.”
“Please do,” Iris said.
Her father sat at the end of the table. His hands rested on his knees, the scarred index knuckle turned down. His chipped wedding ring caught the desk lamp whenever he moved. He had been quiet since Iris laid out the form, as if stillness might make his offer easier for her to take.
“Let me sign,” he said. “You can witness it. The business goes back where it belongs.”
“Where does it belong?” Iris asked.
“With me.”
“That’s a conclusion. I’m asking what you want.”
His eyes shifted to the ledger. “I want this off your name.”
Iris felt the old familiar impulse to turn the answer into a task. Ask about the papers. Ask what the archive could do. Make a list, find the missing mechanism, keep the conversation from touching her.
Next
With Edwin now identified but the return still unsigned, Iris must learn what he will actually choose before the dated October 21 photograph makes the next move for them.
