The Terms of Presence
The strip lay between the ledger and Ruth’s notebook, its demand still legible: OWNER’S WITNESS: REQUIRED.
Iris could keep asking her father what he had hidden. The paper would still be there when he answered. She pulled the ledger toward her and opened it to the page where Edwin remained present but uncertified.
“Ruth, write down what I say before I touch anything.”
Ruth flipped to a fresh page. “Go ahead.”
“I am the owner of Calloway & Sons. I witness that Edwin Calloway is physically present in this house. I do not certify his identity, his return, or any death record.”
Her father watched her from beside the corridor door. His ring caught the light when he folded his hand. “You’re willing to put that in the ledger?”
“I’m willing to put down what I can verify.” Iris laid the Polaroid strip beside the open page. “The paper is making a demand. That’s what I can verify too.”
Ruth kept writing. “I’ll mark this as your account of the document, not a finding about where it came from.”
“Good.”
Agnes leaned over the page without touching it. “The archive may treat a signature as acceptance.”
“Then I won’t sign acceptance.” Iris took the pen from Ruth and held it above the ledger. “I’ll sign as witness to presence. The last time I did that, it left the return contested.”
“It did,” Agnes said. “For a while.”
The qualification landed hard. Iris looked at the strip. “What changes it?”
“I don’t know.” Agnes eased back from the ledger. “I thought I knew what the archive would preserve. I don’t know anymore.”
Iris had wanted Agnes to have an answer. She had wanted her father to have one too. Instead, there were only people who had mistaken their guesses for protection and left her to inherit the consequences. She set the pen down on the line marked OWNER.
Her father reached for the ledger, then stopped with his hand above the cover. “If you put my name there, it may make me the subject again.”
“It already has you pending.”
“I know.” He lowered his hand. “I’m not asking you to hide it. I’m asking you to be careful.”
“That’s what you said when you hid the pictures.”
He took the words without looking away. Ruth stopped writing long enough to glance between them, then continued.
Iris signed the line beneath her statement. She wrote WITNESS beside her name, then added: PRESENT ONLY. SUBJECT NOT CERTIFIED.
Next
With Edwin’s status still contested, Ruth’s next recorded question forces Iris’s father to account for what he actually did inside the archive after staging his death.
