The Line Between Entries
At 0600, Jonah set the sealed recorder beside the lower station terminal and waited for Mara to decide what they were willing to give up with it.
The copy was verified. The seal was intact. The separate archive feed was open, but the outgoing circuit remained closed. A narrow submission field offered one label: REVIEW MATERIAL. Beneath it, the system asked whether the package included an identified human source.
“No,” Mara said.
Jonah looked from the prompt to her. “The log has operators in it.”
“It has entries made at an operator console. That isn’t the same thing as identifying a voice in the disputed attachment.”
He studied the sealed recorder, then nodded. He entered the package’s checksum and their chain-of-custody statement. Mara signed beneath his name as the second witness to the copy, not as a witness to every call inside it. They sent the manifest first.
The terminal returned an acknowledgment from Harbor Cairn. Nell Vey had received the manifest and requested the source package for comparison. No destination had been assigned. No bridge had been opened.
Jonah broke the seal and connected the recorder to the submission port. The package moved in numbered blocks. Mara watched the progress field rather than the old receiver record, where the disputed transcript still sat beneath the prompt to identify its speaker.
Daniel was at the far end of the room, braced against the wall beside Subject One’s interface chair. He had insisted on standing while they started the review, though the effort had left his face pale. When Mara glanced over, he gave her a small, impatient lift of his chin.
“Keep going,” he said. “I’m not the one being reviewed.”
She faced the terminal again. The package completed its transfer, and a new line appeared: SOURCE COPY RECEIVED — HUMAN REVIEW PENDING.
For a few seconds, nothing changed. Then the old receiver record refreshed.
A new attachment appeared beneath Vey’s receipt. Its heading said FIELD RESPONSE ACCEPTED. The body contained a brief confirmation in Daniel’s voice: *I am the source. Send them now.*
Jonah swore under his breath. Daniel pushed away from the wall, then had to catch himself against the chair.
Mara’s hand moved toward the outgoing controls and stopped short. The circuit was still closed. The attachment had arrived through the separate archive feed, as the others had. A claim, not a dispatch. A copied voice, not a person asking for help.
The system opened a new speaker-identification prompt.

Vey has made the false claims non-actionable, but the Listener can still append to the mainland record—and Mara must find out what the source log cannot prove about Blackwater.
