Start reading →Thousands of years ago, the Great Sundering shattered the terrestrial world. Its continents became countless islands adrift in the heavens, while the oceans vanished into the Aethersea—a luminous, aurora-bright mist of raw magical energy far below. Humans, elves, and other peoples now live as Skyfarers, crossing the open air aboard aether-ships: wooden galleons lifted by enchanted sails and elemental crystals. The bravest among them are Cloudseekers, or Mistbreakers, who hunt lost relics and forgotten fortunes in the ruins beneath the mist. There, in the toxic depths, lies the Old Surface: a wasteland of dead civilizations, prehistoric traps, mutated titans, and magic no living culture truly understands. Above, colossal Aether Leviathans drift through the clouds, while ancient war-golems called the Rusted patrol sunken fortresses with murderous, spirit-haunted purpose. This is a world of skyborne freedom, perilous exploration, strange beauty, and adventure balanced over an abyss.
Orra Pell
Practical, observant, stubbornly brave, and inclined to hide fear behind dry assessments of equipment and risk.
Orra grew up among the lower rigging and salvage crews of a minor floating island, learning early that an intact winch can matter more than heroics. At the story’s beginning, she serves as the newest Deep-Diver aboard a small Cloudseeker vessel and is desperate to prove she belongs beyond shallow salvage routes.
Vey Sarn
Steady, blunt, protective, and quietly superstitious about the creatures and ruins beneath the mist.
Vey commands the aether-ship carrying Orra’s crew, earning a living through exploration, escort work, and carefully chosen recovery jobs. He knows the sky lanes and leviathan territories better than most, but his caution suggests he has seen an expedition go wrong in the depths.
Brask-of-the-Rails
Gregarious, irreverent, and fiercely loyal once trust has been earned.
Brask is a veteran deckhand who handles chain-harpoons, aether-infused firearms, and the brutal work of keeping a levitating galleon functional. He treats Orra like an inexperienced younger sibling while privately relying on her attention to detail more than he admits.
Nima Quill
Intellectually restless, warm in private, and liable to pursue an elegant magical solution before considering how dangerous it is.
Nima reads the moving constellations to steer the ship’s protective fields and weave aether into barriers or blasts. She joined the crew to study the strange celestial patterns that appeared after a recent disturbance in the Aethersea, bringing both valuable skill and unanswered questions.
Harl Venn
Exhausted, secretive, and driven by desperate conviction that the crystal must reach someone capable of following it.
A veteran Cloudseeker captain whose expedition found the resonant crystal and was destroyed after the Ghost Isle emerged. He carried the artifact to the sky-tavern while fleeing those who had detected its signal.
