The desk stood in Lydia’s rented room above the village library, where the furniture had been placed temporarily while the demolition company cleared Bellwether’s remains. It was smaller than Nell remembered. The house had enlarged everything—the staircase, the windows, the long dining table, even the people who had occupied it. Here the desk looked like an ordinary walnut piece with a water stain near one corner and a brass lock darkened by use.
Lydia had left the key on the mantel. She was in the kitchen making tea, though Nell had not asked for any.
“Why didn’t you give this to Eleanor?” Nell asked.
“Because it wasn’t hers yet.”
“That’s not how custody works.”
“It is how possession works.” Lydia set two cups on a tray. “You’re the one who wanted to know what was in it.”
Nell carried the tray to the desk. The room had one window overlooking the library’s back steps. Children came and went below with paperbacks under their arms, their voices rising through the glass. The ordinary movement unsettled her more than the empty lot where Bellwether had stood. The house was absent, but life had not altered itself to acknowledge the loss.
The key entered the lock without resistance. Inside the desk were three shallow drawers and a compartment hidden behind a warped panel. The drawers contained no papers from the house: a bankbook in Lydia’s name, old prescription slips, a set of copper cuff links, and a packet of letters tied with green thread.
Nell did not touch the letters first. She opened the hidden compartment.
There was a small envelope inside, addressed in a boy’s careful hand.
NELL WHITCOMB
BELLWETHER HOUSE
JULY 18, 1957
The envelope had never been stamped. The paper was creased once down the middle, then flattened again. Nell knew the handwriting before she saw the signature. Daniel’s letters had always leaned forward, as if each word were trying to reach the next one.
Lydia entered with the teapot. She saw the envelope and stopped.
“You knew it was there,” Nell said.
“I put it there.”
“After he died?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Lydia placed the teapot on the desk but did not pour. “You were fourteen. Then you were fifteen. After that, you were busy becoming the person you believed your father required.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“No.” Lydia sat in the chair beside the window. “It is the answer I have.”
Next
With Daniel’s letter added to the independent record, Eleanor turns her attention to Lydia’s thirty-year silence—and to the version of events Lydia has never yet signed her name to.
Nell turned the envelope over. The flap had been sealed, then opened with a knife and closed again. Someone had read it. Lydia did not deny it.
“Did you show it to my father?”
“No.”
“Did he know it existed?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe you kept this for thirty years without reading it?”
“I read it once. That was enough.”
Nell looked at the opened seam. “You had no right.”
Lydia’s expression remained severe, but her fingers tightened around the edge of her skirt. “Neither did you, when you ordered him to take the book.”
The reply was accurate enough to prevent an answer.
Nell opened the envelope. The letter contained one page, written on pale blue stationery torn from a school notebook.
Nell—
I gave Tom the book because you told me to. He says he will keep it safe, but he is already talking about the house as if it were his. I don’t know what he has promised your father, and I don’t think you know either.
I’m going to the dock because I want you to come there. Not your father. You. If you still want the book back, come before dark. If you don’t come, I will understand what I am to you.
Daniel
There was no date beyond the one on the envelope. No accusation. No declaration of love. The last sentence had been written more faintly than the others, as if the pencil had begun to run out.
Nell read it twice. The second reading did not change the words, but it altered the order in which they entered her. For thirty years she had imagined Daniel as frightened, indignant, or calculating. The letter made him young. That was worse. A young person could still believe another person’s choice mattered.
“He wanted me to come,” Nell said.
“Lydia already told you that.”
“She told me what he called from the water.”
“He wanted you before the water.”
Nell folded the letter along its existing crease. “Why keep it?”
“Because it belonged to him.”
“That never stopped you from keeping other things.”
Lydia looked toward the window. “The papers from the witness room belonged to everyone who had been made part of that crime. This did not. It belonged to Daniel and to you.”
“You decided that alone.”
“I decided many things alone.”
The admission had no pride in it. Nell placed the letter on the desk between them.
“What else is here?”
Lydia nodded toward the packet tied with green thread. “Those are mine.”
Inside were six letters from 1957, all written by Lydia and never sent. The first was addressed to Daniel’s mother in Albany. Lydia had written that Daniel had fallen from the dock while the others were nearby, that the weather had changed suddenly, and that the family was devastated. She had not mentioned the rope, the ledger, or the delay. The second letter was less polished. It said that Daniel had been alive in the lake and that her father had watched him disappear.
The remaining letters stopped halfway through. In one, Lydia had written, I heard him call for Nell, and then crossed out Nell’s name so hard the paper had nearly torn. In another, she had begun, I have been waiting for someone to ask me what I heard, but no one has asked.
Nell read in silence until Lydia said, “I never sent any of them.”
“Why write them?”
“To find out which version I could live with.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
The answer was so plain that Nell looked up.
Lydia poured the tea. The first cup went to Nell, though neither of them had touched the tray. “I told myself I was preserving the truth,” she said. “Sometimes I was. Sometimes I was only preserving my power to decide when the truth would be used.”
Nell held the cup without drinking. “The demolition.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted us here because you knew the house would be gone afterward.”
“I wanted the house gone before any of you could turn it into a shrine or a defense.”
“And you wanted to control the last summer.”
Lydia’s gaze moved to the letter. “I wanted one thing in my life to end because I chose the ending.”
It was not absolution. Nell recognized the distinction. Lydia had not been forced into silence all those years. She had made use of it, just as the others had made use of Daniel’s death. The difference was only in the shape of the benefit.
A knock sounded at the door. Eleanor stood in the hall with a canvas document case under one arm.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “Lydia told me you might be here.”
“She told you about the desk?”
“She told me there was a further item she had not yet surrendered.”
Lydia gave a faint shrug. “She is very persistent.”
Eleanor looked at the letter but did not reach for it. “What is it?”
“Daniel’s,” Nell said. “He wrote it before he went to the dock.”
“Then it should be preserved with the other materials.”
Nell expected the old resistance to rise in her: the desire to read it again, to hide it for one night, to decide what its inclusion would make her. Instead she placed the letter in Eleanor’s open folder.
Eleanor noted the transfer on a form. “Who handled it after Daniel wrote it?”
“Lydia,” Nell said. “She opened it and kept it here.”
Lydia did not object.
Eleanor turned to her. “Will you give a statement about that?”
Lydia looked at the green-threaded packet, then at Nell. “Yes.”
It was the first time Lydia had agreed before being pressed.
Nell rose from the desk. The room seemed smaller now that the hidden compartment was empty. Outside, a child dropped a book on the steps and laughed while another scolded him. Eleanor sealed Daniel’s letter into a clear sleeve. Lydia remained seated beside the window, her hands folded over the letters she had never sent.
At the door, Nell stopped.
“Did you ever think he would forgive me?” she asked.
Lydia did not answer immediately. “He was waiting for you to come,” she said. “That is not the same thing.”
Nell left without asking which of them Lydia meant.
