Chapter 13 of 22·6 min read·That same afternoon and evening
The Statements
By three o’clock, the five of them were sitting in Eleanor Voss’s office above a pharmacy in Brattleboro. The room had two windows, a filing cabinet, and a table too small for the canvas case. Through the glass, Nell could see people carrying paper bags along the pavement, absorbed in errands that had nothing to do with the dead.
Eleanor placed the cylinder on a square of blotting paper. She was younger than Nell had expected, perhaps forty, with dark hair cut at her jaw and a habit of reading every page twice before touching it.
“Who has handled this since it was recovered?” she asked.
“Nell,” Tom said.
Eleanor looked at Nell.
“Lydia gave it to me. I carried it out of the house. Tom placed it in my car.”
“Anyone else?”
“No.”
Eleanor wrote this down. She did not ask whether the cylinder had spoken to them, or whether the house had seemed to release it reluctantly. She asked where it had been kept, who had heard it, and whether any part of the recording had been erased or damaged. Her questions made the morning feel less like an ending and more like an object being taken apart.
“The documents will be copied and sealed,” she said. “The cylinder will go to a specialist. I’ll arrange an independent transcription. No one here will receive the original back without a formal reason.”
Tom leaned toward the table. “We should discuss the accounts before they’re put into circulation.”
“We will discuss custody first.”
“I’m not talking about custody. I’m talking about context.”
“Context can be included in your statement.”
He smiled, but his face had tightened around it. “If the materials are sent to a prosecutor without explanation, they’ll be read as if five frightened children planned a murder.”
“They did not plan a murder,” Eleanor said. “That is different from saying the materials will be harmless.”
The office grew still. Nell had the strange impression that Eleanor’s restraint was not kindness. It was simply a refusal to perform outrage before she had finished reading.
She opened a file and removed five sheets of paper.
“You will each give a separate statement. Not a joint account. Not a correction of one another. Begin with what you wanted in July of 1957, then state what you knew, what you did, and what you received afterward. If you do not know something, write that. If you remember something only because you have repeated it for thirty years, say so.”
Mara gave a short, humorless laugh. “And if we remember it differently?”
“Then the differences remain.”
“I’ve made a career out of those differences.”
“Yes,” Eleanor said. “That may be relevant.”
They drew lots for the order of interviews. Nell’s name came first. Tom looked at the slip in her hand, then at her, as if he suspected the arrangement had been engineered. Nell almost told him it had not. She was tired of defending accidents.
Eleanor’s private room was at the rear of the office. It contained a desk, two chairs, and a tape recorder with a red button. Nell sat with her hands folded while Eleanor placed a legal pad between them.
“Do you want the recorder running?” Eleanor asked.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I’ve spent thirty years improving the wording.”
Eleanor pressed the button.
Nell began with her father’s name. She described the ledger, though she did not pretend to understand every transaction recorded in it. She said that Daniel had found the book and that she had believed the evidence could destroy her father, the house, and the future she had assumed belonged to her. She said she ordered Daniel to give the ledger to Tom because she thought Tom could be trusted to hold it without using it.
That part was true, though it had once seemed sufficient.
“Did you know Tom expected Bellwether House in exchange for his silence?” Eleanor asked.
“No.”
“Did you ask Daniel to bring Tom to the dock?”
“No. I told Daniel to give Tom the book. I did not tell him to go to the dock.”
“Why did he go?”
Nell looked at the recorder. The red button remained lit.
“Because he believed I would come after him if something went wrong.”
She told Eleanor that Lydia had heard Daniel calling her name. She told her about the rescue rope, her father’s delay, and the fact that she had remained inside. She did not describe herself as a frightened girl. The phrase had been available to her all morning, and she had rejected it. Fear might explain why she had stayed away. It did not erase the choice.
“Did you gain anything from Daniel’s death?” Eleanor asked.
Nell’s mouth dried. “Yes.”
“What?”
“My father remained free. The family’s name remained intact. I inherited the expectation that I could become what I became.”
“Did you profit financially?”
“Not directly.”
Eleanor waited.
Nell corrected herself. “That answer is too narrow. I profited socially and professionally from the silence. I also burned copied pages from Daniel’s evidence.”
She heard her own voice say the words and understood that this was the first time she had offered them without placing them inside an argument.
When the interview ended, Eleanor stopped the recorder but did not close the pad.
“There may be no legal action,” she said. “The age of the events, the deaths involved, and the condition of the records all matter. But legal action is not the only consequence of preserving an accurate account.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Nell looked through the rear window toward the pharmacy sign below. “I’m beginning to.”
Tom went in next. Through the wall, Nell could hear his voice rise and fall, smooth at first, then clipped. Suzie sat beside her with the envelope of letters in her lap. The envelope had softened at the corners from years of being moved between drawers.
“Did she ask about the letters?” Suzie said.
“Not yet.”
“I want them read in the right order.”
“There may not be a right order.”
Suzie looked down at her hands. “That’s what I told myself when I kept them.”
Mara sat at the end of the table, staring at the canvas case. Art had gone outside to smoke, though no one had seen him light a cigarette.
“When this is over,” Mara said, “they’ll make a clean story out of it.”
“Who will?”
“Everyone. The solicitor, the newspapers if they hear, Daniel’s relatives, us. Someone will decide what the shape was.”
“Then give your statement.”
Mara smiled without pleasure. “You make it sound like a brush you can put down.”
“It isn’t.”
The door opened. Tom emerged carrying his untouched sheet. He had lost the ease in his expression.
“She wants to know what I signed,” he said.
“You signed it,” Nell replied.
“That isn’t an answer.”
“No. It’s the problem.”
He looked as though he might argue, then folded the paper along its middle. “She says the agreement may be evidence of conspiracy.”
“It may be.”
“And you’re comfortable with that?”
Nell considered the question. Comfortable was the wrong measure. She had spent her life choosing tolerable outcomes and calling them principles.
“No,” she said. “I’m willing.”
Tom turned away. It was the first answer she had given him that he could not redirect.
Near five, Eleanor gathered the signed statements. Suzie surrendered her letters. Art came back from outside and placed the stolen pages and his old novel beside the canvas case. Mara brought no paintings. She only wrote, on the final page of her statement, that she had sometimes altered what she remembered in order to make the dead resemble the person she needed them to be.
Eleanor sealed the materials in three envelopes and marked each with the date.
“The originals remain here,” she said. “You may return tomorrow to review the copies. After that, the record will leave my office.”
“Where will it go?” Art asked.
“To the archive I select, unless a competent authority requires it first.”
Outside, evening had begun to gather over the street. Bellwether House was gone, but the five of them remained arranged around a table, no longer able to use the building as an excuse for their proximity.
At the door, Lydia stopped Nell. She had said almost nothing during the interviews. Her coat was buttoned wrong, and she had not corrected it.
“Did you tell her about your father?” Lydia asked.
“Enough.”
“Enough is a dangerous word.”
“It’s all I had.”
Lydia studied her, then reached into her handbag. She took out a small brass key and held it between them.
“What is that?” Nell asked.
“The key to the desk in my room.”
“The house is gone.”
“I know.” Lydia closed Nell’s fingers around it. “There are things in the desk that do not belong to the house.”
Nell looked at the key. It was warm from Lydia’s hand.
“What things?”
Lydia glanced toward the sealed envelopes on Eleanor’s desk. “You’ll have to decide whether you still want to know.”
Next
The key opens Lydia’s last private archive, where Nell may find a record that changes not what happened to Daniel, but what Lydia intended the survivors to do with the truth.
