By the time they reached the lawn, the demolition crew had brought the eastern wall down. A section of roof lay across the herb garden, crushing the rosemary and the stone edging Lydia had repaired every spring since 1962. Dust moved through the trees in a pale sheet. The house remained standing at the center of it, but only because the front rooms had been spared for the last pass.
Nell carried the cylinder beneath her coat. Lydia had given it to her without being asked. The letters and ledgers were in a canvas case at Suzie’s feet, and Tom had taken the photograph from the witness room, holding it by one corner so he would not leave fingerprints on the glass.
Mara stood beside the gravel drive, facing the house. “It’s going to be gone before lunch.”
“The documents won’t be,” Nell said.
Mara looked at her. “That’s what you have to say?”
Nell had several answers available. She could say that documents mattered because they survived memory. She could say that the solicitor would know what to do with the cylinder. She could say that the house had become unsafe, which was true and beside the point.
“I don’t know what to say yet,” she said.
It was the first honest answer she had offered Mara in thirty years.
The foreman approached from the machinery, a broad man with orange dust on his boots. He had been told that the occupants were removing personal effects, but the canvas case and the expressions on their faces had made him cautious.
“You have five minutes,” he said. “Then I need everybody clear of the building.”
“Five minutes for a house that took thirty years to lie about us,” Art said.
The foreman glanced toward Lydia. “Ma’am?”
“Give us ten,” Lydia said. “Then you may do what you came to do.”
He looked at the house, then at the old woman. “Ten.”
They gathered beneath the beech tree, where the ground was free of falling plaster. Suzie spread a blanket over the grass and placed the papers on it. Her hands were steady. She arranged the envelopes by date, then stopped herself and left them in a disorder that seemed, to Nell, almost defiant.
Tom had found the solicitor’s number in the directory at the village post office. He dialed from the crew’s truck while the others waited. When he returned, he had written an address on the back of a fuel receipt.
“Eleanor Voss,” he said. “Independent practice in Brattleboro. She can see us this afternoon.”
“Can she authenticate the cylinder?” Art asked.
Next
At Eleanor Voss’s office, the survivors will have to decide whether the cylinder is evidence against Lydia’s dead father—or against all five of them.
“Arrange it,” Art repeated. “That’s a consultant’s word.”
Tom folded the receipt. “It’s a solicitor’s word too.”
No one answered him. His old charm had become something they could see being applied, and therefore something they could refuse.
Lydia sat on the blanket. The dust had settled in her white hair. She was holding the photograph of the dock, not looking at it.
“The voice,” Nell said. “The one in the wall.”
Lydia’s fingers tightened around the photograph.
“What did Daniel want?” Nell asked.
“I told you what I heard.”
“You told us he called for me.”
“I heard him call your name.”
“That isn’t the same thing.”
Lydia raised her head. Around them, the others had gone quiet. Even Art did not reach for a pen.
For a while Lydia watched the house. A gust lifted the torn edge of the roof felt and dropped it again.
“He wanted me to tell you to come down,” she said.
Nell felt the words settle between them. “Come down where?”
“To the dock.”
“Why?”
“Because he was in the water.”
“That can’t be all.”
“No.” Lydia looked at her directly. “He wanted you to know he had done what you told him to do. He wanted you to understand that he had given Tom the book. He thought you would come for him.”
Nell remembered the dock as it had been that night: the wet boards, the lantern swinging from its hook, Daniel’s hand clenched around the ledger before Tom seized him. She had not gone outside. Her father had told her to remain in the house. She had believed, or claimed to believe, that Daniel was making a scene to frighten them into returning the book.
“What exactly did he say?”
Lydia’s mouth moved, but no sound came. She looked down at the photograph, at Daniel’s blurred figure near the edge of the frame.
“‘Tell Nell to come down,’” she said at last. “Then he said, ‘I did what she said.’ I heard that much. Afterward he asked for the rope.”
Tom turned away. Suzie closed her eyes.
Nell did not ask whether Lydia was certain. Certainty had been the instrument they had all used to keep the past arranged. Daniel had called for her. He had expected her to come. Her father had known he was alive. The rope had been within reach.
“You could have told me,” Nell said.
“I was eight.”
“You were old enough to tell me this summer.”
“Yes.” Lydia’s answer came without defense. “I was also old enough to know that if I told you first, you would find a way to make it evidence instead of an accusation.”
The remark should have angered Nell. Instead it embarrassed her because it was accurate. She had spent the summer asking what could be proved, what could be excluded, what language would survive examination. Daniel’s voice had not survived in a form that could be neatly examined. It had survived as a request addressed to her.
Mara picked up one of the letters. “So he wasn’t asking for the ledger.”
“No,” Lydia said. “He was asking for the person who had sent him back.”
The foreman called from the edge of the drive. “Time.”
They packed the papers. Suzie placed the letters in a separate envelope and wrote her own name on it. Nell noticed and waited.
“What is that?” she asked.
“My statements,” Suzie said. “The ones I kept because I thought preserving them made me useful.”
She handed the envelope to Nell. “They belong with the rest.”
Art laughed once, quietly. “There goes the last private collection.”
Suzie looked at him. “You can still keep your drafts.”
“I don’t want them.”
He took the pages from his coat. They were the opening chapters of the novel he had been trying to finish, covered in his narrow handwriting. For several seconds he held them over the blanket. Then he put them back in his pocket.
“I’m not burning them,” he said. “I’m just not calling them Daniel’s story anymore.”
Mara had been staring at the front door. “What will you call it?”
“Mine,” Art said. “If I can manage that.”
They walked toward the cars. Lydia remained beneath the beech tree until Nell went back for her. The old woman had left the photograph on the blanket.
“You should take it,” Lydia said.
“I don’t want another thing from this house.”
“It isn’t from the house.” Lydia picked it up and pressed it into Nell’s hand. “It is from the dead.”
At the roadside, the machinery began again. The sound came through the ground before it reached the air. Nell watched the upper windows collapse inward, one after another. Behind them were the nursery, the witness room, the locked room, and the corridor where Daniel’s voice had called her name across thirty years.
Tom stood beside his car with the fuel receipt in his hand. “We should decide who speaks to Voss first.”
“Nobody speaks first,” Nell said. “We all give statements.”
He studied her. “That isn’t how these things are managed.”
“No,” she said. “It is how they are finished.”
The house gave way behind them. Lydia did not turn around. Suzie did. Mara covered her ears. Art watched until the last wall fell, then opened the passenger door for Lydia without making a joke.
Nell placed the cylinder on the seat beside her. The metal case clicked softly whenever the car moved. At the village limits, she took out a sheet of paper and began writing the first sentence of her statement.
She wrote Daniel’s name. Then, after a long hesitation, she wrote what he had asked for: not the ledger, not forgiveness, but for Nell to come down.
