Warmth Behind the Door
One rain-dark evening
Chief Miller finds Toby collapsed at the edge of Oakhaven and carries him, despite Toby’s fear and resistance, to Clara’s bakery. Clara establishes the bakery as a place where Toby can choose the pace of care, and Toby accepts his first spoonfuls of broth while Miller promises to stay until the doctor arrives.

The Questions That Stayed Gentle
That same evening
Doctor Pell examines Toby with his consent, identifies a severe sprain or possible small fracture, and treats the cold injury risk without forcing him through pain. Toby chooses to remain at Clara’s bakery and admits that he left somewhere unsafe, gaining protection without having to reveal the whole truth.

The Door I Chose
The next morning
Toby goes to the clinic and chooses to participate in imaging, learning that his ankle is badly sprained but not fractured. When Miller asks what may threaten him, Toby gives his first concrete clue: the man called Brindle and the red water tower, then asks Clara not to send him away if Brindle comes.

The Map Beneath the Flour
That same afternoon through the following night
Miller tells Toby he will quietly investigate the red water tower and learns more useful details when Toby chooses to help mark the road: the tower stood behind a fence, its ladder faced the road, and a creek ran to the left. Toby remains in the bakery during ordinary business, choosing not to hide completely, and asks Miller to tell him before any search begins.

The Name on the Map
The following morning through midday
Miller brings the old survey, which names the northwest logging settlement as Sootbank and places a water tower beside a creek and a road curving around a rise. Toby recognizes enough to make it the likely place he escaped, though neither the records nor his memory can confirm whether Brindle is there now; Toby asks to see current roads before Miller chooses a route and stays in the bakery as customers come and go.

The Road We Could Take
That afternoon
Miller learns from a local traveler that the road to the old kiln is passable by cart, but the creek crossing beyond it has a soft bank and must be inspected on foot. Toby chooses to share what he remembers while admitting what he cannot confirm, and Miller plans to take the kiln road with someone else, check the crossing, and return before deciding what comes next.
- Chapter7
What the Bank Would Hold
That day, from morning until early afternoon
Miller and the mill driver reached the old kiln, then turned back after finding the creek bank unstable and two crossing stones shifting underfoot. The road’s bend around a rise fits part of Toby’s memory, but the tower and fence remain unconfirmed; Toby asks to help assess a possible northern route before Miller makes another decision.
- Chapter8
The Track Above the Bend
The next morning through early evening
The clerk’s report led Miller and the mill driver to inspect the northern track. They found a firm gravel shelf upstream from the slumped bank, but the creek was too high and fast to cross safely; Toby marked the new approach while keeping the route’s unknowns clear. Miller promised to tell him before returning to test the crossing as the water drops.
- Chapter9
The Ground on the Far Side
Four days after the rain eased
Miller and the mill driver tested the northern creek crossing with a rope; at the lower water level, the gravel bottom held and the crossing was usable on foot, though not for carts. Toby asked Miller to follow the far-bank track only as far as it might meet the old road, stopping short of Sootbank, and Miller agreed to report back before deciding whether to go farther.
- Chapter10
Where the Track Joined
The following day, from morning to late afternoon
Miller followed the far-bank track with the mill driver and reported that it joined the old road; they stopped where Toby had asked, without reaching Sootbank or seeing the tower. They also found an unchecked branch toward the rise, and Toby asked for the evening to study the map before deciding whether Miller should investigate farther.
