The Keeper Beneath the Flame

The knocking came again, not against the lighthouse door but from the glass above them.

Three slow blows trembled through the lens chamber. The white flame shuddered in its cradle, throwing Sebastian’s shadow across the walls in the shape of a man with antlers. Lucian looked up and sighed.

“Of course,” he said. “It’s never a ghost in a respectable hallway.”

Sebastian kept one hand on the door latch. Beyond it, the stairwell spiraled down into darkness, though he knew the tower had no lower stairs. The lighthouse had stood on the cliff for nine hundred years. His family had kept its flame for six hundred of them. There was no cellar. There was no room beneath the lens.

Yet something below was breathing.

“What did you bring here?” Sebastian asked.

Lucian’s smile was thin. “A question.”

“Questions don’t knock.”

“Some do, if they’ve been waiting long enough.”

The fourth knock cracked the silence. A thread of white fire slipped from the lens and crawled down the brass housing. Where it touched, frost bloomed. Sebastian saw a face in the glass: an old man with his own eyes, his own crooked mouth, and blood running from both ears.

His grandfather.

The face mouthed a word Sebastian could not hear.

Lucian seized his wrist. “Don’t answer it.”

“You said the lighthouse was calling.”

“I said it was calling you. That isn’t the same as asking permission.”

The old face vanished. In its place appeared a dark sea beneath a pale sky. Across that sea, another lighthouse stood with its beacon extinguished. A woman’s voice drifted through the chamber, blind and distant, singing a melody that seemed to have been cut in half.

Sebastian recognized no words, but he recognized the sorrow. It was the sound of a door closing on someone who still stood outside.

Then Vera sang his name.

Far away, in the Day King’s palace, Vera sat in darkness with both hands pressed against her throat. The dead lamps around her had begun to glow—not with fire, but with reflections of the sea. She could hear the white flame now. It hummed beneath the song, counting down in a language older than either king.

“Sebastian,” she whispered, and heard his death-note answer from across the world.

It was not near. That frightened her more.

At Vesper’s End, Sebastian tore his arm free. “You know what this is.”
