The Flame That Sang

The lighthouse at Vesper’s End had burned for nine hundred and twelve years, and Sebastian’s family had kept it burning for eight hundred and six of them.

He knew the number because the names were carved into the stairwell wall, one for every keeper who had died beneath the Night King’s moon. Some had frozen at the window. Some had fallen from the gallery. One had been found smiling beside a cold lamp, though no one had ever discovered what he had seen.

Sebastian had always thought his own name would be added in the ordinary way: after a long service, with gray in his beard and the satisfaction of having carried the family curse to its proper end.

Then, at midnight, the flame turned white.

He stood before the great lens, his hand still wrapped around the iron crank. Beyond the glass, the Night Sea rolled beneath a sky without stars. Far across the water, another lighthouse marked the Day King’s border with a needle of gold. Between the towers, the darkness was absolute.

White fire crawled through the lamp’s blue-black heart.

Sebastian reached for the shutter lever. The flame hissed, and a voice spoke from inside it.

“Open the door.”

He drew his knife.

The voice came again, quieter this time. “Sebastian Vale. Open the door before the last note.”

No one had called him by his full name since his mother’s funeral. He backed toward the spiral stair, but a sound rose from below: three measured knocks against the lighthouse door.

At the same moment, in the Day King’s palace, Vera heard a man die.

She sat beneath the golden dome of the Hall of Seven Suns, plucking the final string of her harp while courtiers applauded. Their clapping was bright and harmless. The death-song threaded through it like a wire pulled tight.

Not now, she thought.

The melody belonged to no one in the room. It was too deep for a child, too young for the king, and carried the salt-sting of a place far from the palace. A lighthouse. A man standing beside a frightened flame.

The note had not yet ended. That was the horror of her gift. She never heard death as a prediction. She heard it as a song already being sung, with only the final breath withheld.

Vera smiled toward the throne. “Your Majesty,” she said, “I believe the evening has become dangerous.”

The Day King leaned forward. Light poured from his crown and made the musicians squint. “Whose death did you hear?”

“Yours, perhaps. I haven’t met the deceased yet, so I can’t say whether he deserves the distinction.”
