  1. Chapter31

    The First Reach

That same passage through the source

Mercy follows the newly awakened path and reaches a floating continent, where many separate choices create the first narrow strip of returning gravity. Before the connection can spread, a chained continent carrying the old, coercive kind of gravity begins moving toward the network, forcing Oliver and Nadia to choose how to meet it without becoming its carrier.

  2. Chapter32

The Continent That Could Not Answer

That same passage, over the next several minutes

Mercy asks the chained continent whether it wants connection and discovers that its central heart speaks for the whole mass while individual people answer separately, with yeses, noes, and fear. Oliver and Nadia create a boundary from many distinct willing points, slowing the continent without carrying it, but a human voice begins knocking from inside the opened heart-mechanism.

  3. Chapter33

The Voice That Chose Its Own Name

    That same passage

Oliver and Nadia enter the heart-mechanism and meet Edrin Pell, the original human carrier whose consent was made permanent and then falsely treated as the continent’s agreement. By asking the living and preserved people to affirm that Edrin’s first consent had ended, they free her from the heart’s claim and weaken its unified voice, though the chained continent remains bound to the mechanism and the network is narrowing.

  4. Chapter34

The Weight That Would Not Follow

The same passage of time, over the course of Mercy’s withdrawal

Mercy withdraws from the chained heart while Edrin begins freeing preserved people one by one, asking their names and whether their old choices still stand. Tomas Venn, a woman with a ring, and an uncertain child choose to follow Mercy, while others refuse or remain undecided; the heart loses more of its claim but the continent remains bound and begins drifting toward the awakened network in separated sections.

  5. Chapter35

    The Route That Pointed Back

    That same hour

Oliver and Nadia choose to follow the gauge’s new route back toward the chained continent, but only under explicit boundaries: Nadia will connect willing supports without commanding them, and Oliver will retreat if the people refuse. Mercy reaches a separated fragment and begins freeing named individuals from the heart’s collective claim, while a new presence inside Mercy’s furnace asks who will carry those who answer no.

  6. Chapter36

    The Shape of No

    That same night

Oliver enters Mercy’s furnace and rejects the presence’s demand that someone carry every refusal, establishing instead a separate boundary where unanswered or ended choices can remain without being assigned. Edrin continues freeing preserved people through direct questions, while Tomas willingly adds his lamp as one distinct support and the fragment’s local gravity stabilizes; the furnace’s unresolved refusals now form a third marked direction on the gauge.

  7. Chapter37

    The Road That Held Apart

That same day, over several hours

Mercy holds the separated fragment while its remaining people answer individually: Pella chooses her millstone as a support, while Harn names his uncertainty and is protected from having it treated as consent. Nadia turns the new refusal-boundary into a moving ring that breaks the heart’s claim on the fragment, but the ring’s route descends toward the living stairway beneath the source and the origin of Nadia’s core.

  8. Chapter38

    The Cradle That Asked

The same descent, over several hours

Mercy and the moving boundary reach the cradle where Nadia’s core was first placed. Nadia learns that Queen Seris gave the core to the source only to prevent Nadia from becoming its carrier, and she successfully withdraws from the core’s imposed role without surrendering the core itself; the cradle opens onto a deeper passage as the source changes its demand from a carrier to an owner.

  9. Chapter39

The Thing That Would Not Belong

The same descent, ending moments after Chapter 38

Nadia and Oliver confront the source’s new demand for an owner and discover that the source preserved abandoned objects after their owners withdrew, treating the absence of ownership as permission to claim them. Nadia claims responsibility for her own answer without owning the source, while Oliver refuses to reclaim or pass on his forgotten heart-weight; the boundary spreads through the origin chamber as separate witness rather than possession, forcing the presence to release Mercy. A new route appears toward drifting abandoned objects, one of which is carrying a name.

  10. Chapter40

    The Name Beneath the Iron

That same passage through the source’s darkness

Mercy follows the new route to a broken bridge and finds a brass clock carrying the name Orren, the forgotten name of Oliver’s first self. Oliver asks rather than decides for the presence within it; Orren chooses to leave the source aboard the undertrain, apart from Oliver, while the two trains keep their separate schedules.
