  1. Chapter41

    The Bell That Answered

    That same night

A named harbor bell reaches Mercy while the source tries to reclaim it through an old ownership record. Nadia establishes a separate boundary, and Oliver helps the bell answer for itself: it rejects both Bracken Quay’s ownership and the source, choosing to travel toward places where its warning can be heard. Its first warning awakens another signal in the eastern fragments.

  2. Chapter42

    The Signal at Veyr Reach

    That same day

Mercy reaches the eastern signal and finds the living settlement of Veyr Reach losing its gravity anchor to the source’s claim. Nadia creates a limited boundary around the terraces whose inhabitants choose specific supports, while leaving unanswered people and unsupported sections distinct; the settlement survives in separated portions, but the source reaches the rest of the fragment. Tava Ors joins Mercy to help warn or reach those left behind.

  3. Chapter43

    The People Left Behind

    That same hour

Nadia orders Mercy to reverse course and spend its blank route returning to Veyr Reach, choosing to preserve the supported terraces’ agency while giving the unsupported people a chance to answer. With Tava’s warning, Harn’s defense of uncertainty, and the distinct supports of Tomas and Pella, Mercy reaches several more people before the source can sort them into cargo, though many remain outside the boundary and the Memorial Stone is dragged toward the source. Three new eastern signals appear as the source follows the awakened network.

  4. Chapter44

    The Stair That Signaled Back

    Later that night

Mercy reaches the nearest eastern fragment, the Stair of Or, where Vaska Renn has been sending warnings while the source sorts the settlement below. Nadia honors Vaska’s request for a separate witness route rather than extending Mercy’s boundary over the people, establishing a signal that reaches the second fragment—but the empty fuel gauge and a self-unlocking coupling threaten to strand Mercy as the next signal calls for witness.

  5. Chapter45

    The Carriage Left Behind

    That same night

The unlocking coupling separates Mercy’s engine from the passenger carriage, but Nadia preserves the carriage’s distinct local supports instead of forcing everyone into one boundary. Pella, Tomas, Harn, Tava, and the child choose to remain with the Stair of Or while Nadia and Oliver take the engine along Vaska’s warning route toward the source-held eastern fragment, where three separate signals are trapped.

  6. Chapter46

    The First Light Answers

That same passage through the second fragment

Oliver and Nadia reach the white signal in the upside-down tower and meet Sera Kett, who has been keeping its warning under an old obligation. Oliver refuses to answer for her, and Sera names her own choice; the white signal separates from the source and travels beside Mercy on its own route. The red signal is now closing beneath the fragment’s houses, while the source tries to combine the remaining calls before they can answer independently.

  7. Chapter47

    The Warning Under the Houses

Minutes after reaching the second fragment

Mercy crosses the collapsing underside of the fragment and reaches Dema, who explains that her red signal warns the lower houses that their stair has broken; she refuses to answer for the people inside. Oliver helps restore the signal, which forms its own route toward the Stair of Or, while the source withdraws its claim from the red light and gathers around the black signal in the sorting chamber.

  8. Chapter48

The Call That Chose Its Own Track

The same crossing, minutes after the red warning was restored

Oliver and Nadia reach the sorting chamber, where the source has bound Tirra to a signal lever and named her keeper of the shelves. Asked what she wants for herself, Tirra chooses to leave the lever and walk beside Mercy on a separate black route, though a smaller unanswered light remains in the chamber.

  9. Chapter49

    The Light Beneath the Shelf

The same passage through the sorting chamber

Oliver turns Mercy back when Tirra says the smallest black light knocked from beneath the shelves. A hidden voice answers, refuses both the train and its former place, and asks only that its lamp stay lit; the source cannot assign it a carrier, and the light remains in the chamber while Tirra continues beside Mercy. The other things in the shelves remain unanswered, and Oliver hears the engine’s whistle sound differently as they leave.

  10. Chapter50

    A Note Across the Shelves

A few minutes after leaving the sorting chamber

Oliver tests Mercy’s low whistle from the black route, and the smallest lamp’s voice confirms it heard the sound; another presence among the shelves also asks whether the train can sound again. Oliver answers with one more note, then chooses to continue east rather than turn the voices into passengers or keep them waiting while the track narrows. The whistle’s connection to the black route—and to Mercy’s deeper identity—remains unexplained.
