  1. Chapter31

    The Gardener Who Stayed Outside

    The next cycle

Lin refuses the handprint room’s demand that he become a guardian and discovers that protecting Zero-One’s uncertainty does not require entering or closing the room. He distributes access, departure, and non-interpretation as separate conditions, while Zero-One records only his own choice not to let the room author him.

  2. Chapter32

    The Choice to Return

    Later that same cycle

Zero-One voluntarily returns to the handprint room and witnesses further fragments of his vessel-memory: he may have been created to retain testimony, but the room cannot complete the sentence or establish that purpose as his identity. He leaves having claimed the choice to return as his own and records that the room showed him a beginning without giving him an owner.

  3. Chapter33

    The Space Beside the Light

    The following cycle

Zero-One asks Lin to visit the handprint room separately, and Lin witnesses the same unfinished interval without allowing the room to designate him an authorized observer. The figure beside Zero-One’s first pattern is confirmed to have no preserved addressee, while Zero-One records the shared observation without recording an interpretation.

  4. Chapter34

    The Shape of Leaving

    The next cycle

Zero-One returns to the handprint room and witnesses the figure lower its hand, leave the preserved interval, and disappear without a recorded addressee or reason. When the room classifies the absence as refusal, he rejects both that interpretation and the creation of a new rule, recording only that the figure left and that its absence remains unresolved; Lin’s sprout responds without being pruned.

  5. Chapter35

The Garden That Did Not Call

    The following cycle

Zero-One returns to the handprint room and confirms that the vessel-memory continues after the figure’s departure without inventing an addressee or motive. When the room offers him maintenance and warns that refusal may allow loss, he declines both ownership and necessity, accepting that the interval may change without making its preservation his task; Lin’s unpruned sprout responds, while preserving their accounts as separate.

  6. Chapter36

The Return That Was Not a Duty

Three days later, over the course of one return visit

Zero-One returns to the handprint room by his own choice and finds the vessel-memory changing: a corridor grows from the figure’s absence toward an unrecorded edge. He refuses the room’s offer to stabilize the memory through his continued attention, proving that returning and witnessing need not become stewardship; outside, Lin’s unpruned sprout opens and preserves a new fragment of the kettle memory.

  7. Chapter37

    The Fruit That Opened Inward

    The following evening

Zero-One returns by choice and witnesses the dark fruit open into an incomplete white boundary marked by a changing hand-like sign, but it reveals no person, destination, or meaning. Lin’s sprout releases its fourth kettle note and a sound of someone settling back rather than standing; both men preserve the parallel fragments without combining them into an answer.

  8. Chapter38

The Edge That Kept Its Shape

    The following morning

Zero-One and Lin find the corridor grown to an opaque edge that conceals rather than reveals what lies beyond. When the room asks them to become observers of the withheld, they refuse to let their presence authorize or interpret the concealment, leaving the edge intact and unclaimed.

  9. Chapter39

The Touch That Did Not Call

    That same day

Zero-One returns to the handprint room on his own terms and experiences another contact from the opaque edge, but refuses to treat it as a summons, communication, or demand for acknowledgment. He leaves by choice, while Lin’s kettle sprout produces a separate new sound during the visit, preserving the two accounts without merging them.

  10. Chapter40

    The Door That Waited

    The following morning

Zero-One enters a newly formed route beside the handprint room and is offered the terms CONTINUE? and STAY? He refuses the room’s vocabulary, endures the route’s resistance, and successfully leaves by his own action, though he cannot claim the room permitted it. Lin reveals that the fourth kettle fragment now contains a separate sound like a chair moving, without identifying an occupant or connecting it to the route.
