The Answer He Kept
The morning after Vale’s testimony
Jonah testifies that he knew Elias planned to use the restored chair and chose not to warn the police because he wanted Vale and Elias forced to answer together. He also admits he wanted Vale to look at him and suffer, without using that motive to excuse his silence; the prosecutor says Jonah’s conduct may receive separate review, while Vale’s charging decision remains open.

The Charge That Stayed
Two days after Jonah’s testimony
The prosecutor declines to charge Jonah for the conduct described in his testimony, but formally charges Vale for knowingly shutting him in with the lethal chair. Vale refuses to let his defense turn Jonah’s silence into an excuse; the prosecution may call Mara to testify in person, though she has not yet agreed or been cleared to travel.

Her Own Account
The day of Vale’s first appearance and the following morning
Vale makes his first court appearance, pleads not guilty, and remains in custody as the case proceeds. Mara tells him she will testify in person when her doctors clear her, but will give her own account rather than sign his; she is prepared to name both her knowledge and his deception publicly.

The Account She Kept
Six weeks later, over the course of one day
At a preliminary hearing, Mara testifies in person that she knew the chair could kill, believed Vale would test it on himself, and heard Jonah ask to leave before Vale shut the door. She owns her part without softening his, and the judge sends Vale’s charge to trial; Vale must now decide whether to testify himself.

The Answer He Will Give
The day after Mara’s preliminary-hearing testimony
After reading Mara’s testimony, Vale tells his lawyer to call him as a witness at trial, acknowledging that he wanted Jonah to watch and refusing to build his defense around Mara’s or Jonah’s choices. The prosecutor’s witness list names Jonah, so Vale’s decision now means he will face the boy’s testimony before taking the stand himself.
