By nine the rain had filled the service road outside Marrowick with shallow brown water. Ione Mercer stood beneath the eastern stairwell while a forensic technician photographed the page through its plastic sleeve. The mill rose around them in broken levels, brick and iron showing through the collapsed plaster. Above, the gallery was a black line behind the wall.
“Your page,” the technician said, “wasn’t there when we cleared this section yesterday.”
“Nothing was cleared,” Mercer said. “It was looked at.”
He glanced toward the roof. “That distinction may become important.”
She had already understood it. Whoever planted the page had known which parts of the passage the police would search first and which they would leave for later. The paper had not been dropped. It had been placed where a person standing in the gallery could see the investigators below without being seen in return.
Mercer went back to the gap in the brick. The upper gallery lay beyond it, six feet above the mill floor and separated from the passage by a rusted iron frame. A narrow ledge ran along the wall. Someone could have stood there in a coat, watching Vale prepare his experiment. Someone could have left by the eastern stairwell before Vale ever reached the candles.
Or someone could have stayed.
She opened the photograph of the page on her phone and enlarged the red correction. The letters had bled slightly into the paper fibers. The ink was newer than Vale’s handwriting, but the correction had been made with care. Whoever had written it had copied the slope of his script, not merely the words.
“Run the red ink against the markings at the crime scene,” Mercer said. “The soot message too. I want composition, not opinions.”
The technician nodded.
“And pull the mill’s employment records. Night staff, maintenance, anyone with access to the upper gallery in 2004.”
“That’s twenty years of—”
“Start with the night of Vale’s experiment.”
He stopped objecting. Mercer took the page from its evidence folder long enough to examine the reverse. There were faint pressure marks where another sheet had once rested against it. She tilted it toward the lamp and saw the impression of a sentence, reversed and incomplete.
...did not know the boy was...
The rest vanished beneath a crease.
She did not photograph it immediately. Instead she carried the page into the portable examination tent, where the light was flatter. The impression became clearer.
Next
When Mercer enters Vale’s study, she will bring the name of the night worker whose records place a child at Marrowick on the night Vale lit the first candle.
Mercer read the sentence until the words stopped behaving like evidence and became an accusation. Then she photographed it and called Junie Park.
Junie answered from Vale’s study.
“I’m with him,” she said.
Mercer looked through the tent wall at the darkened mill. “You should have called me last night.”
“I know.”
“You received a photograph of the room and a warning about another witness.”
“I know that too.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Junie’s voice lost the warmth she used for her podcast. “Because I wanted to ask him first.”
“For what?”
“Whether he knew who the witness was.”
“Does he?”
A pause, filled by static and rain. “Ask him yourself.”
Junie ended the call before Mercer could answer.
Inside the study, Edgar Vale stood at the window with the curtains drawn. He had refused to sit. The green pencil remained beside the proofs on his desk, exactly where the intruder had photographed it. Junie had placed the phone between them, screen down, as though either of them might reach for it and burn a hand.
“You called Mercer,” he said.
“I called because she found something in the page.”
“What?”
“A sentence pressed into the reverse.”
His gaze shifted to the manuscript cabinet. “You read it?”
“I read what I could.”
“Then you know more than I do.”
“That’s not a difficult standard.”
Vale turned from the window. He wore the same dark jacket he had worn at Marrowick, though the collar was dry and carefully brushed. Junie noticed a pale smear of red dust near one cuff. It might have been rust. It might have been the pigment from the correction. She did not point to it.
“Mercer thinks a boy was listening in the passage,” Junie said.
Vale’s expression altered by less than a fraction. His hand went to the back of the chair but did not take hold.
“There were workers’ children around the mill,” he said. “The place was not empty.”
“You told Mercer you were alone.”
“I told her I had no companion.”
“That is not the same sentence.”
“It is the sentence I chose.”
Junie pushed the phone toward him and turned it over. The photograph filled the screen: his study from inside, the open manuscript, the red marble, and in the window a shadow behind the photographer.
“Who stopped breathing when you lit the first candle?” she asked.
Vale looked at the image. He did not ask how she had obtained it. That answer had already become less important than the fact that the photographer had stood inside his room and known where to point the lens.
“I don’t know,” he said.
“You do.”
He touched the screen with one finger, enlarging the reflection until it broke into gray squares. “This person is not behind the photographer.”
Junie leaned closer. “What?”
“The glass is old. It reverses the room.”
“That doesn’t answer me.”
“It answers the photograph.”
He enlarged the shadow. The raised hand was not near the face. It was pressed against the window from the other side. Five pale shapes showed against the rain-dark glass, and below them, almost hidden by the desk, was the reflection of a second figure.
Not tall. Not standing.
A child’s head, turned toward the manuscript.
Junie drew back from the desk. “That image was taken in your study.”
“Yes.”
“The child wasn’t there.”
Vale closed the photograph. “You don’t know that.”
“I was in the room when the police searched it.”
“After the photograph was taken.”
Her anger sharpened because he had found the exact weak place in her argument. “You saw someone at the mill.”
He went to the cabinet and removed the private manuscript. The red marble had been returned between the pages. He had left it on the desk before sleeping. He was certain of that. Certainty had become a poor instrument, but he had no other.
“There was a coat,” he said. “Near the eastern stairwell.”
“Whose?”
“I don’t know.”
“And the boy?”
“I never saw a boy.”
“That is different from there being no boy.”
Vale opened the manuscript to the marked page. Beneath the marble, a new line had appeared in red ink. It had not been there when he entered the room.
YOU ASKED HIM TO WATCH.
Junie read it over his shoulder. Vale remained still, his finger resting on the page’s edge.
“No,” he said.
The word came quietly. It was not denial. It was recognition arriving too late.
Mercer’s car stopped outside the house. Through the curtain gap, Junie saw her cross the path without an umbrella. Vale did not move toward the door.
“Are you going to tell her?” Junie asked.
He kept looking at the red sentence. “Tell her what?”
“That you weren’t alone.”
“I have told her that.”
“Not in the way that matters.”
The bell rang once. Mercer waited. Vale’s eyes went to the eastern wall, where the old house settled around its pipes and wires. From somewhere inside the study came a small sound: glass touching wood.
Junie turned.
The red marble sat on the floor beneath the desk.
Vale had not seen it fall. Neither of them had heard the cabinet open. On its surface, beneath the lamplight, the white fracture had changed position. It now resembled a narrow doorway.
Mercer rang again.
Vale picked up the manuscript, leaving the marble where it was. Then he walked to the door, carrying the evidence that could condemn him and the silence that had already done so.
