The seventh port continued to breathe through the darkness.
Mara kept one hand on the console and the other around the paper strip. The emergency lamps showed the names in red: Helen, Jonah, Lena, Daniel, Mara. Beneath them, the destination line had filled with ELLISON, though no one had spoken it.
“Don’t touch the microphone,” Shaw said.
“I’m not going to.”
The ceiling speaker crackled. Mara’s own voice answered, calm and professional. “Destination accepted.”
Jonah looked from the speaker to the declaration port. “It can’t accept something nobody gave it.”
“It can if the system records silence as authorization,” Shaw said. “That was the design.”
“You designed it.”
“I designed the response index. Not this relay.”
“But you knew what it did.”
Shaw ignored him. She had moved to the rear panel, where thick cables entered the wall and disappeared beneath the floor. Her fingers hovered over a row of knife switches. Six were labeled with county stations. The seventh had no label at all.
Mara watched the switch nearest Shaw’s hand. It was already down.
“Isolate the other channels,” Mara said.
Shaw turned. “That will leave the seventh open.”
“The other channels are how it reaches people.”
“The seventh is how it reached you.”
“Then we choose which danger we can see.”
Daniel leaned against the console. The skin along his neck had tightened over the silver cables. A dark line ran beneath his jaw and disappeared beneath his collar. He was watching the seventh port, not the switches.
“There’s water in the line,” he said.
Jonah glanced at him. “Water?”
“Not here. In the sound.” Daniel raised a hand, then lowered it before touching the port. “The chamber was flooding when Mara opened the cage. The tubes filled. It changed how the voice moved.”
Shaw’s expression sharpened. “The acoustic network was designed to carry pressure changes.”
“Pressure changes,” Jonah repeated. “You mean a person can be hurt through a telephone line, but now we’re pretending it’s plumbing?”
“No one is pretending anything.”
The speaker clicked again. Helen’s voice came through, close enough to make Mara picture the dispatch floor: the blue glow of the monitors, the coffee ring beneath Helen’s keyboard, the chipped red polish on her thumbnail.

With Daniel connected to the reopened route and every emergency station listening, Mara must determine whether Caleb’s warning came from the dead or from something wearing his voice.
Mara’s fingers tightened around the paper. Helen had been the first person to train her on the overnight shift. She had also been the first name printed on the assignment list.
“Don’t answer,” Daniel said.
“I know.”
“It wants you to think that not answering is still a choice it can use.”
That was the problem. Refusal had become material. Silence filled the circuit. Hesitation gave it time. Even looking at the microphone felt like participation.
Jonah pulled the paper from Mara’s hand. “What if the list isn’t a death schedule?”
“Shaw said it was an assignment.”
“I said it creates one,” Shaw replied.
Jonah pointed to the names. “Then these may be destinations, not victims.”
Mara looked at him. “The line beneath them was blank.”
“Exactly. A source list and a destination field. It has identified the people attached to the event, but it hasn’t completed the route.”
Shaw crossed the room and took the paper back. Her eyes moved over the printed names. “The system’s old terminology used subject assignments. It did not distinguish cleanly between the observed and the affected.”
“You built a machine that can’t tell the difference between a witness and a target?” Jonah asked.
“No. The machine tells the difference. The people who operated it chose not to.”
A sudden burst of static came from the seventh port. Under it, Mara heard something knocking in a regular pattern. Three taps. A pause. Two taps.
Daniel straightened.
Mara knew the pattern. When they were children, he had used it against the wall between their bedrooms after their mother locked him out for sneaking out. Three taps meant are you awake. Two meant answer me.
He lifted his hand toward the port.
“Don’t,” Mara said.
His hand stopped. “That was our knock.”
“It knows.”
The knocking came again. Three. Pause. Two.
Then Daniel’s voice spoke from the port, thinner than the voice beside her. “Mare-bear.”
Daniel flinched as though the word had struck him. Mara felt the old anger rise, useful because it was familiar. The imitation had used the nickname before, and Daniel had hated it all his life. The thing knew that. It had learned the difference between a wound and a key.
Shaw reached for the seventh switch.
“If you close it,” Daniel said, “it’ll use the county lines.”
“If I leave it open, it will use you.”
“It’s already using me.”
Mara caught Shaw’s wrist before she could move the switch. Shaw looked at her hand, then at her face.
“What are you doing?” Shaw asked.
“Finding the destination.”
“You cannot interrogate the relay.”
“I can give it one.”
Daniel pushed away from the console. “Mara, no.”
She turned toward him. “You said it needs a choice.”
“It needs a choice it can claim.”
“Then I’ll give it one it can’t misunderstand.”
Jonah stepped in front of the declaration port. “That is exactly how we got here.”
“No. We got here because it kept deciding what our choices meant.” She looked at the blank line on the strip. “This time it gets a destination in plain language.”
Shaw’s face had gone still. “If you speak into that port, the route will complete.”
“Where will it go?”
“Wherever you send it.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“It’s the only one I have.”
Mara studied the relay room. The six county switches. The cable bundle disappearing into the mainland. The seventh channel, still pulsing faintly. Blackwater was not just a place anymore. It was a source, a route, a chamber beneath water, a set of voices. If she said the island, the relay might send the listener back. If she said the dispatch network, it might reach every emergency station before anyone could shut it down.
Jonah saw her considering both. “Mara, don’t choose the island because it sounds like sending it home.”
“It came from there.”
“Maybe. But the return circuit identified you as the source.”
The truth of that settled over the room. The system had followed her because she had named where the hostile transmission came from. It no longer cared about geography. It had attached the route to her voice.
Daniel came closer. His eyes were bloodshot, but his voice held steady. “If you name Blackwater, it may use me as the bridge.”
“Why?”
“The cables.” He touched the side of his neck. “They were connected to the chamber before you freed me. I can still hear it when the pressure changes. If the relay sends the route back, it may pull through me.”
Mara looked at the metal beneath his skin. She had freed him once. A second attempt might not leave him alive.
The speaker used her voice. “Destination required.”
She stepped toward the declaration port.
Jonah caught her sleeve. “If you do this, say something that describes a place. Not a person.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t. That’s what it wants. It wants you to make the sacrifice sound like a routing decision.”
Mara removed his hand gently. The bruise around his throat had begun to darken again. He had been assigned before. She would not let the system turn his fear into another instruction.
She pressed the transmit button.
The relay room went silent. Even the wind above the weather station vanished behind the sealed walls.
“Destination,” Mara said, “Blackwater Island. Original seventh chamber.”
The printer began to run.
For several seconds, nothing else happened. Then the six county lights on the monitor came back on at once. The map filled with white points. A new line appeared beneath SOURCE VERIFIED.
DESTINATION DECLARED: BLACKWATER ISLAND.
ROUTE: OPEN.
BRIDGE SUBJECT: DANIEL ELLISON.
Daniel folded at the waist. Shaw caught him before his head struck the console. The silver cables beneath his neck lit with a pale blue pulse.
Mara released the transmit button, but the microphone remained active.
“No,” she said.
Her voice emerged from every speaker in the room, doubled and delayed.
“No. No. No.”
The seventh port filled with the sound of rushing water. Through it came another transmission, distant and broken by static. It was not the entity’s voice. It was a man’s voice, strained with pain.
“Mara, don’t send it back.”
She knew that voice. She had heard it once beneath the island, before the seventh door closed.
Caleb Voss continued, speaking from somewhere beyond the route. “It isn’t waiting in the chamber anymore.”
The relay printed one final line.
DESTINATION REACHED.
Daniel’s eyes opened. He looked past Mara toward the ceiling, listening to something no one else could hear.
“It’s on the island,” he whispered. “And it heard you.”
Then the emergency telephone above them began ringing, and every county station on the map answered at once.
