Chapter 14 of 53·6 min read·The same night, shortly before dawn
The Mainland Relay
They reached the mainland before dawn in a maintenance launch that had been chained beneath the tide station pier. Shaw found the key in a rusted cabinet. No one asked how she knew where to look.
Mara sat at the stern with the headset in her lap and did not put it on again. The cable had been cut when Helen tried to disconnect the line, but the earpiece still produced a faint hiss. She kept it turned away from her. Every few minutes, the hiss formed the beginning of a word and dissolved before she could recognize it.
Daniel stood beside the engine housing, one hand gripping the rail. The crossing left him gray-faced. His coat was wrapped around his neck to hide the silver cables beneath his skin, though the collar shifted whenever the boat struck a wave.
“You should lie down,” Mara said.
“I did six months of that.”
“You spent six months in a cage.”
“Still counts.”
Jonah gave a short laugh from the forward bench, then pressed his fingers to the bruise around his throat. Lena sat beside him with a flare gun across her knees. Shaw had taken the tiller. She handled the launch without looking at the water, steering toward the mainland cliffs where the emergency relay was buried beneath an old weather station.
The island disappeared behind rain. For a while, the only sound was the motor and the slap of water against the hull. Then the launch’s radio clicked on by itself.
“Coastal Emergency Dispatch,” Mara’s voice said. “What is your emergency?”
Daniel reached for the set.
“Don’t,” Mara said.
The voice continued in the calm, practiced cadence she had used for years. It asked for a location. It asked whether anyone was injured. It repeated the questions until the words flattened into a rhythm.
Shaw looked over her shoulder. “It’s using the boat’s transmitter.”
“No,” Mara said. “It’s using the open channel.”
The radio showed no frequency, only a row of seven green bars. Six were lit. The seventh remained dark.
Mara reached for the power switch, but the voice stopped her.
“Please don’t send anyone.”
The words were not an imitation of her dispatch manner now. They were the first message from Blackwater, spoken in Daniel’s voice.
He turned toward the radio. His expression changed before he could hide it.
“He knows we’re still alive,” the voice said.
Next
The mainland relay begins translating Mara’s refusal into an authorization, and the seventh channel speaks in Daniel’s genuine voice.
Daniel pulled the battery cable free. The radio went quiet. The seventh bar lit.
Nobody spoke until the mainland rocks rose ahead of them.
The weather station stood on a cliff above the harbor, its windows boarded and its antenna mast bent toward the sea. A concrete stairway led from the landing to the building. Wind pushed spray over the steps. Shaw tied the launch to a ringbolt and climbed first, carrying the relay cabinet’s brass access key in her fist.
Mara followed with the headset. She had considered throwing it into the water, but the choice felt too much like an instruction. The network had already followed her without needing the device.
At the top of the stairs, a red emergency telephone hung from the weather station wall. It rang as they passed.
Lena flinched. Jonah stopped.
“It’s not connected,” Shaw said.
The telephone rang again.
Mara reached for it, then saw the handwritten warning taped beneath the receiver: DO NOT ANSWER DURING FACILITY LOCKDOWN.
Shaw moved between her and the phone. “We don’t know what it can use once you respond.”
“Then we don’t answer,” Mara said.
The ringing ceased. A second later, every boarded window spoke in Mara’s voice.
“Destination required.”
Jonah stared at the walls. “That’s new.”
“No,” Shaw said. “It’s the same circuit. It has reached the relay housing.”
“Why does it need a destination?” Mara asked.
“Because a source without a destination is incomplete.”
Mara looked at the access key in Shaw’s hand. “And if we give it one?”
Shaw’s face remained controlled, but she held the key too tightly. “Then it may stop searching.”
“Or it may send something there.”
“That is also possible.”
They entered through a side door. The weather station smelled of wet plaster and old wiring. A staircase descended beneath the lobby, where faded arrows pointed toward STORM MONITORING, FUEL STORAGE, and COASTAL EMERGENCY DISPATCH. The last sign had been painted over, but the letters showed through.
They went down in single file. Daniel kept one hand on the wall. Mara watched his boots on the stairs, counting each step without meaning to. At the bottom, Shaw opened a steel door with the brass key.
The relay room was smaller than the tide station chamber, but it contained the same architecture: copper tubes running through the walls, banks of ceramic switches, and seven microphone ports arranged around a central console. Dust covered everything except the seventh port.
A red light blinked above it.
“Was this built for Blackwater?” Jonah asked.
“Not built,” Shaw said. “Connected.”
She crossed to the console and began opening metal panels. Inside, the wiring had been repaired many times. New cable ran beside old cloth insulation. Some circuits vanished into the floor.
Mara found the dispatch line on a small monitor. It showed a map of the mainland emergency network. Each county station appeared as a white point. One by one, the points turned gray.
“Are they offline?” Lena asked.
“Not necessarily,” Shaw said. “The relay may be holding them open.”
A line of text appeared beneath the map.
SOURCE VERIFIED: ELLISON, MARA.
DESTINATION: UNDECLARED.
Jonah approached the screen. The bruise around his throat had darkened again. “Can it still reach me?”
Mara did not answer. She saw the small microphone beside the seventh port and the label beneath it: DECLARATION.
Shaw noticed her looking. “The system needs a spoken authorization to complete the route.”
“Mine.”
“Yours is the recognized source.”
“Then I stay silent.”
“That may not be enough.”
The room’s ceiling speaker clicked. A man’s voice spoke from it, rough and weak.
“Mara?”
Daniel turned sharply. His hand went to the knife at his belt.
The voice continued. “Mara, it’s me.”
Daniel stood beside her, breathing hard. His face had lost what little color remained.
Shaw said, “It is not him.”
“I know,” Mara said.
The voice changed. It became Helen’s. “Mara, answer me. We have a dispatcher trapped on line four.”
Then Jonah’s voice: “Don’t leave me here.”
Then Mara’s own voice, younger and frightened, from a memory she had not spoken aloud since childhood. “You promised you’d come back.”
Daniel shut his eyes.
Mara moved to the console. “Can we isolate the mainland dispatch floor?”
“Not without closing the source circuit.”
“Can we close it?”
Shaw pointed to two levers beneath the monitor. ACCEPT and REJECT. A third slot was empty. “The return circuit replaced the old destination control. It has made you the authorization path.”
“What does that mean in plain language?” Jonah asked.
“It means the relay cannot decide whether to transmit until Mara declares where the transmission belongs.”
A printer began to chatter behind them. Paper emerged in a narrow strip. Mara tore it free.
At the top was a time: 02:17.
Below it, a list of names.
Helen.
Jonah.
Lena.
Daniel.
Mara.
The final line was blank.
Jonah read over her shoulder. “A prediction?”
“An assignment,” Shaw said.
“Difference?”
“A prediction describes an event. An assignment creates one.”
The seventh microphone brightened. Beneath it, another line appeared on the monitor.
DESTINATION REQUIRED.
Mara looked at the six gray points on the map. One remained white: the weather station beneath their feet.
“It wants this room,” she said.
Shaw’s gaze shifted to the copper tubes disappearing into the walls. “The return circuit located the original transmitter through the old chamber route. This relay may be the mainland end of that route.”
“And the seventh channel?”
Shaw did not answer immediately. “The seventh channel was never connected to a county station.”
A sound came through the microphone port. Not speech. A wet, uneven breath.
Daniel stepped toward the console. “That’s the chamber.”
Mara caught his sleeve. “You’re sure?”
“I heard it from inside the cage.” He looked at the seventh port. “It isn’t calling from Blackwater anymore.”
The blank line on the printed strip filled with a single word.
ELLISON.
The room lights went out. Emergency lamps came on, washing the console in red. Somewhere above them, the weather station’s old telephone began to ring again.
This time, the receiver lifted by itself.
Helen’s voice came through the room, thin with static. “Mara, I need you to choose a destination.”
Mara looked at the microphone, then at the six names on the paper. The system had turned silence into delay, and delay into another kind of choice.
She picked up a pen and wrote on the back of the printed strip: DO NOT SPEAK.
Daniel read it and nodded.
Then the seventh port answered in his real voice.
“Good,” it said. “Now let me show you what your silence authorizes.”
