The Return Signal
Mara pulled the lever toward RETURN TO SENDER.
It resisted. Corrosion had welded the mechanism halfway between REJECT and the unmarked notch. Behind her, Jonah made a thin, choking sound. His hands clawed at his throat, but the dark branching lines had reached beneath his jaw and were moving upward toward his face.
“Shaw,” Mara said. “What am I supposed to do?”
“Give it a destination.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“It was never designed to be one.” Shaw leaned over the cabinet, reading the trembling indicators. “The return circuit needs an originating authorization. A declared source. If you send it back without one, the system will search for the nearest valid voice.”
The speaker clicked. Mara heard herself say, “I am the source.”
Shaw’s expression changed. “Don’t repeat that.”
Mara tightened her grip on the lever. The metal edge cut into her palm. Through the headset, Helen was shouting over a storm of ringing phones.
“Mara, we’re losing the floor! Every line is open. People are calling from houses, cars—some of them are hearing you. They think there’s an evacuation order.”
“Put me on the main circuit.”
“You are on all of them.”
A burst of static broke across the headset. Then a man’s voice said, “Coastal Emergency Dispatch. What is your emergency?” It was not Helen. It was Mara’s voice, flattened into the official cadence she used for strangers.
“Do not route any calls from Blackwater,” Mara said. “Disconnect the relay if you can.”
“We can’t find it,” the false voice replied. “It’s inside the system.”
The lever shifted another fraction. A blue light came on beneath the red indicators.
Shaw caught Mara’s wrist. “The circuit will use the person it has already selected as a bridge.”
“Jonah.”
“And you.”
Jonah’s boots scraped against the concrete. He had managed to stand, though his head sagged and his fingers had gone gray at the tips. “Send it back,” he rasped.
Daniel seized his shoulder. “You don’t know where it goes.”
“I know where it is now.” Jonah looked toward the speaker. “Inside me.”
“That’s what it wants you to say.”
“Then it’s having a very productive night.”
Mara saw the choice the machine had built for her. Protect Jonah and authorize the pattern. Refuse him and let the pattern finish its work. Shaw had said the system required a declared source, and the voice on the headset had already supplied one.
Next
With the listener now using Mara as its verified source, the survivors must reach the mainland relay before the false emergency broadcast becomes permanent.
The room filled with voices. Helen shouting. Dispatchers answering calls. Children crying in distant houses. Mara’s own voice repeating an evacuation order in different tones. Beneath them all, a steady pulse beat through the relay cabinet.
Mara placed the headset on the floor and stepped on the cord.
“If it needs my voice,” she said, “it can have my voice on my terms.”
Shaw moved toward her. “Mara—”
“Tell me what the system records.”
“Decision, subject, destination.”
“And a source.”
“Yes.”
Mara looked at the return switch. “Then I’m not choosing Jonah. I’m not choosing the network. I’m choosing the signal.”
She pressed the transmit key on the headset with her thumb and spoke into the microphone.
“This is Mara Ellison at Blackwater tide station. The hostile transmission is originating from the relay itself. Return it to sender.”
The false voice repeated her words half a second later.
The relay screamed.
Jonah’s back struck the cabinet. The dark lines beneath his skin stopped moving. For an instant, nothing happened. Then every indicator on the panel flared white, so bright that Mara raised an arm across her eyes.
The pressure in the room vanished. Jonah collapsed onto one knee, coughing hard enough to retch. Daniel caught him before his head hit the floor.
From the mainland came a sound like a thousand telephones lifted at once.
Helen spoke through the headset, but her voice was far away. “Mara, something just came back through the lines.”
“What?”
“I don’t know. The calls are—” Helen stopped. “There’s a recording playing on every channel.”
A low tone entered the tide station. It came from the speaker, the headset, the relay cabinet, and the metal walls. Mara felt it in her teeth.
Then the listener spoke.
Not in Daniel’s voice. Not in hers.
The sound was made of many voices compressed into one, each syllable carrying fragments of other words beneath it.
“RETURN ACCEPTED.”
Shaw backed away from the cabinet. “No.”
“What does that mean?” Mara asked.
“It means the system recognized the return as a valid response.”
“Where did it send it?”
Shaw did not answer.
A knock sounded from the maintenance tunnel behind them.
The tunnel entrance was waist-deep in black water. Nothing had been there a moment earlier except floating insulation and a length of loose cable. Now the water trembled in widening rings.
Three knocks came again, evenly spaced.
Daniel got Jonah upright and pulled him away from the cabinet. His silver cables showed pale beneath the skin of his neck. “That route leads to the old chambers.”
“The seventh door is sealed,” Lena said. She had been crouched beside the control panel, one hand braced against the floor. Her face had gone bloodless. “Caleb sealed it.”
“Sealed isn’t the same as empty,” Shaw said.
Mara looked at her. “You knew this could happen.”
“I knew the return circuit might locate the original transmitter.”
“And you didn’t mention that part.”
“I mentioned the circuit had never been tested.”
“You mentioned it after Jonah started dying.”
Another knock came from the tunnel. This time, the water rose against the concrete lip and spilled into the room.
Jonah wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. A dark bruise circled his throat, but the branching marks had faded. “Did it work?”
Mara listened to the headset. The mainland voices had gone quiet. Somewhere far away, Helen was breathing rapidly, waiting for instructions.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s an improvement.”
A fourth knock sounded, followed by a voice from the water.
“Mare-bear.”
Daniel’s grip tightened around Jonah. “Don’t answer it.”
The voice came again, gentler this time. It carried Daniel’s childhood pitch, the one he had used before his voice changed. “You sent me back.”
Mara kept her eyes on the tunnel. “What did we send back?”
The water shifted. Something pale moved beneath its surface, too large to be a reflection and too quick to identify.
Shaw reached for the relay switch. Mara stopped her.
“No.”
“If the return circuit remains active, the connection stays open.”
“That may be the only reason it hasn’t come through.”
Shaw looked at the flooding tunnel, then at the white indicators still burning across the cabinet. “Or the only reason it can.”
Mara picked up the headset. Helen answered immediately, her voice shaking.
“I’m here.”
“Are the calls still coming in?”
“No. They all stopped at once.”
“Can you hear anything?”
Helen hesitated. “One line is still open.”
“What line?”
“Yours.”
Mara heard static, then her own voice whispering from somewhere on the mainland.
“Please don’t send anyone.”
Helen said, “Mara, that isn’t coming from Blackwater.”
The voice continued, now clear enough to sound like Mara standing beside her.
“He knows we’re still alive.”
Mara stared at the tunnel. The water had reached the relay cabinet’s lowest shelf. Blue light pulsed beneath the surface.
“Disconnect the line,” she told Helen.
“I can’t.”
“Try.”
“I did. It keeps reconnecting.”
Behind Mara, Daniel said, “It followed the return.”
She turned. “Where?”
He pointed toward the headset.
“Not here,” he said. “It followed you home.”
The line went dead. On the relay panel, the blue light vanished. Every red indicator turned black except one, which now glowed beside a label Mara had not noticed before.
SOURCE VERIFIED: ELLISON, MARA.
She reached for the switch, then stopped. The tunnel water had begun to drain, pulling scraps of insulation back into the dark. Whatever had knocked from below was gone.
The system had accepted her return. It had also named her as the source.
Mara took the headset and put it back on.
“Everybody move,” she said. “We’re going to the mainland relay.”
