By the time Mara reached the museum, June had turned on only the lights above the worktables. The galleries beyond them stood in partial darkness, their cases emptied one by one for the move. Noah carried in the canvas bag. Mara kept the cassette in her coat pocket.
Samuel was waiting near the loading entrance with a paper sack of sandwiches. He raised it when they came in.
“Food,” he said. “Before the confrontation becomes theatrical.”
“It won’t be theatrical,” Mara said.
June glanced at her. “That’s what people say when they have prepared remarks.”
“I haven’t prepared remarks.”
“Good. Then you can be surprised honestly.”
Thomas was in his office, according to the note June had left on his desk. Mara could see him through the glass partition. He sat beneath the framed photograph of the museum’s opening day, reading a stack of transfer forms. His jacket hung on the back of his chair. The office door was open.
He looked up when Mara entered the workroom. His attention moved from her to Noah, then to June and Samuel. He did not ask why they were there. That was the first thing she noticed.
“Is something wrong?” he asked.
Mara took the cassette from her pocket and set it on the table between the sandwiches and the cataloguing trays.
Thomas did not touch it. “Where did you get that?”
“From Tess Venn.”
The color in his face changed, though not dramatically. His hand moved to the nearest chair and rested on its back.
June pulled out another chair. “Sit down, Thomas.”
He remained standing. “You found her.”
“Yes,” Mara said. “She’s alive. She remembers the pump house. She remembers you being there.”
Thomas’s gaze returned to the cassette. “What did she tell you?”
“That Elena took my camera after I handed it to her. That Raymond took it from Elena. That Cal arrived. That you put Elena in the service room and told her there was a telephone.”
“There was a telephone.”
“It didn’t work.”
“It had been disconnected.”
“Did you know that?”
Thomas rubbed the edge of the chair with his thumb. “Yes.”
Noah shifted beside Mara. “Then why did you send her in there?”
Next
At the transfer meeting, Thomas’s account will enter the public record—but another item in Elena’s museum file may reveal what happened after she left the pump house.
Thomas looked at him, perhaps seeing the adult man and not the child he had once carried through the museum during summer programs. “Because Raymond was outside with Daniel, and he was furious. Elena was seventeen. She was trying to get back to you. I needed her away from him.”
“You needed everyone away from what happened,” Mara said.
Thomas closed his eyes briefly. “Yes.”
The admission did not relieve anything. It made the room more difficult to stand in. June stopped unwrapping a sandwich.
Mara put the cassette player on the table. Samuel had brought it from the conservation room, where it was used to check old recordings before digitization. She inserted the tape and pressed play.
Elena’s voice filled the workroom, quick and young, telling Mara about the camera. When she reached the part about Thomas’s kindness, he looked toward the dark gallery rather than at Mara. His shoulders tightened when Elena mentioned the service room. He listened without interrupting.
The first side ended. No one moved until Mara turned the cassette over.
Thomas said, “You shouldn’t play that.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know what’s on it.”
“You know your own voice.”
The tape began to hiss. Then Thomas spoke from another time, closer to the microphone than Elena had been.
“Mara?”
His younger voice sounded frightened. Not careful. Not warm. The name came again, followed by a scrape and the hard movement of a door.
Mara stopped the tape.
Samuel leaned forward. “That’s the service room.”
Thomas sat down at last. The chair made a small complaint against the floor.
“I found the recorder after you left,” he said.
“Whose recorder?” June asked.
“Elena’s. She had borrowed it from the museum.”
“You said she never borrowed anything,” Mara said.
“I said I didn’t know where she got it.”
“That isn’t the same answer.”
“No.”
Thomas looked at the cassette as though it belonged to someone else. “I called your name because you were outside the door. You had been struck by the flash, and you were trying to stand. Raymond had taken the camera. Daniel was on the floor. Elena was inside with him.”
“Why did you shut the door?”
“Raymond told me to.”
June gave a short, disbelieving laugh. “That’s your explanation?”
“No. It’s what happened.”
The workroom’s heating pipes knocked somewhere above them. Thomas waited for the sound to pass.
“Raymond thought Daniel would die,” he continued. “He said if people saw the boy like that, the county would take him away. He wanted time to move him. I told him he was wrong. I told him we should call an ambulance. He said the camera had pictures, and if those pictures reached the police, everyone would be blamed. He included Mara. He included Elena. He included me.”
Mara could see the old scene only in fragments: the bright stain of the flash, the floor pushing up against her knees, Thomas’s voice somewhere beyond the ringing in her ears.
“You locked us in,” she said.
“I closed the door.”
“You locked it.”
Thomas’s silence answered before he did.
“For less than a minute,” he said.
Noah turned away from him. “That’s supposed to matter?”
“It matters to what I did.”
“It matters to you,” Mara said. “Not to Elena.”
Thomas’s mouth tightened. “I opened it again.”
“After Cal arrived.”
“Yes.”
“And after Raymond took the camera.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Cal was Raymond’s brother?”
Thomas looked at her then. “I knew he was family.”
“You told me you didn’t know who he was.”
“I didn’t know where he came from. I knew Raymond called him.”
Mara felt June watching her, waiting for the next question. For years, she had imagined this conversation as an arrangement of facts that would force Thomas into a single shape: liar, accomplice, coward. Instead he kept supplying distinctions. They did not make him innocent. They made him harder to dismiss.
“Where was Elena when you left?” Mara asked.
Thomas lowered his eyes. “Outside the pump house. Cal had taken Tess toward the road. Elena was standing by the fence. She asked me whether you remembered her name.”
Mara’s fingers pressed against the table.
“What did you say?”
“I said you were confused.”
“Was I?”
“You were hurt. You kept asking where Elena was.”
“And you told her not to come back.”
“I told her she had to leave before Raymond changed his story again.”
“That sounds almost kind.”
“It wasn’t enough.”
“No,” Mara said. “It wasn’t.”
Thomas reached toward the cassette, then stopped before touching it. “Elena gave me that recorder in 1995.”
June straightened. “Why?”
“She mailed it to the museum with the photograph. I didn’t listen to the tape. I thought the side with my voice had been erased.”
“You thought?”
“I heard only static when I tested it. I put it in the drawer with the photograph.”
“You gave Mara the envelope six years later,” Samuel said.
Thomas’s face altered at the date. “I gave her what I could bear to give her.”
Mara looked toward the cases waiting to be dismantled. “You gave me a version that kept you outside the room.”
“Yes.”
It was the plainest thing he had said.
Noah came around the table. He did not touch Mara, but stood close enough that she could feel the warmth of him through her coat.
“Why didn’t you tell her now?” he asked Thomas. “Why wait until she found the tape?”
Thomas looked old suddenly, not because of his face but because of the office behind him—the folders, the emptied shelves, the museum’s long habit of keeping what should have been surrendered.
“Because she came back asking whether Elena left willingly,” he said. “I thought if I told her everything, she would ask what I had done with the truth afterward.”
“She was going to ask that,” June said.
Thomas nodded. “I know.”
Mara picked up the cassette. “The tape stays with me.”
“I know.”
“I’m making copies. One for Tess. One for the county records. One for the museum’s collection, if there’s still a museum by then.”
Thomas looked toward the dark galleries. “There will be a collection.”
“Not the same thing.”
“No.”
She put the cassette back in her pocket. The confrontation had not ended with an apology, and she did not want one. An apology would make a room around the facts, something they could all stand inside and call finished.
At the office door, Thomas said her name.
Mara stopped but did not turn.
“I didn’t know whether Elena survived,” he said. “After she left, I told myself that not knowing was the punishment I deserved.”
Mara looked back at him. “You made it everyone else’s punishment too.”
Thomas accepted this without defense. That, more than his explanations, made her distrust the relief rising in her.
June began gathering the sandwiches. Samuel switched off the cassette player. Noah picked up the canvas bag.
Mara remained by the door, listening to the empty mechanism settle into silence. She had come to make Thomas listen. Instead, he had heard Elena’s voice with them, and the old locked door had become part of the museum’s record.
She opened the office door wider.
“Tomorrow,” she said, “you’re going to tell the county everything you just told us.”
Thomas looked at the forms on his desk. “Tomorrow is the transfer meeting.”
“Then tell them there.”
He nodded.
Mara left him in the office with the door open. This time, no one closed it behind her.
