Tess led them into the kitchen, where a portable cassette player sat beside a bowl of onions. Its plastic lid was cloudy with age. She wiped her hands on a dish towel and set the player on the table without offering to put in the tape.
Mara placed the cassette beside it.
“Do you want me to stay?” Tess asked.
The question was directed at Noah.
“I’m staying,” he said.
Tess gave him a brief, assessing look. “Then don’t explain anything to her while it’s playing.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“You’d be surprised what people do when they think silence is dangerous.”
She left the room. A pan clattered somewhere beyond the kitchen doorway. Mara turned the cassette over in her hands. The label had been written with a blue felt pen, the letters slanting forward. Elena had always written as though the sentence ahead might leave without her.
Noah pulled out a chair. “You can wait until you’re ready.”
“I’ve waited twenty-eight years.”
“That isn’t the same as being ready.”
Mara looked at him. “You sound like June.”
“June sounds like me. She’s older.”
The joke was small, but it gave the room an ordinary edge. Mara put the cassette into the player. When she pressed the button, the machine clicked, whirred, and began to hiss.
At first there was only a scrape of movement and the distant rush of traffic. Then Elena spoke.
“Mara, if this is you, you found Tess. Good. It means she decided not to let me disappear completely.”
Mara gripped the table’s edge.
Elena’s voice was younger than memory had kept it. Not childish. Quick, impatient, alive to the possibility that someone might interrupt.
“I’m recording this because you remember the flash, and I remember what happened before it. Those are not the same memory.”
A pause. Something knocked against the microphone.
“You had the camera. You were going to take a picture of Daniel. You said Thomas needed proof, and then you said no one would believe us anyway. You were shaking so badly you couldn’t get the lens cap off. I took it from you because you asked me to. You said, ‘Do it, Lena. You’re steadier.’”
Mara closed her eyes.
The pump house came back in pieces: rust beneath her palm, Daniel’s shoe caught in the broken cover, Elena’s hair against her cheek. There had been a sentence, perhaps. A request. Mara had remembered the camera as something removed from her, not something she had surrendered.

Before Mara can confront Thomas, the second side of Elena’s tape may reveal whether Thomas recorded it willingly—or whether someone else was holding the door.
“I took the camera because you were looking at the hole and not at the men. Raymond was behind you. Thomas was in the doorway. I thought if I had the camera, they would have to deal with me. I thought that was protection.”
Noah’s hand moved across the table, stopping near hers without touching it.
“Then Raymond used the flash. I don’t know if he meant to blind you. Maybe he wanted the picture. Maybe he wanted you to fall. Afterward you were on the floor, and I had the camera. Raymond took it from me. That part you remember correctly.”
Mara opened her eyes. The distinction was precise enough to hurt. Elena had not corrected the whole story. She had moved its first piece.
“I went into the service room with Daniel because Thomas told me there was a telephone. There wasn’t. Or there was one, but it didn’t work. Thomas knew that. He wanted the door between us and the others.”
The recording crackled. Elena’s voice drew nearer to the microphone.
“Cal came after Raymond. He was angry, but not at me. He said Raymond had called him and told him there had been an accident. He didn’t know about Daniel until he got there. That’s what I believed then. I don’t know if it was true.”
Tess entered carrying a wooden spoon and stood in the doorway. She did not ask them to stop the tape.
“Cal said he could get us out,” Elena continued. “He said Raymond would make sure Daniel’s injury became our fault. He was right about that. He was also the reason we couldn’t stay. Those two things can be true at once.”
Mara watched Tess’s face. It had become still, but not blank. The spoon remained in her hand.
“I took the camera because I wanted the photographs. I wanted proof that the adults had lied. But I also wanted to know what Mara had seen. If the film showed her face, I could tell whether she remembered me standing there. I know that sounds cruel. I was seventeen and thought evidence could keep people from leaving.”
Elena’s age struck Mara with a force the words themselves did not carry. Seventeen. Old enough to make a plan, young enough to believe a camera could hold a person in place.
“There’s something else. Mara, you did not lose the camera. I gave it to Raymond after he came through the service room. I told him the film was blank. I lied. I thought he would take it and leave us alone. I thought I could get it back later.”
The tape clicked softly, as though Elena had shifted in her chair.
“I couldn’t. Thomas found me outside after Cal had taken Tess toward the road. He said you were asking where I was. He said if I went back, the police would take Daniel and blame me for the whole thing. I believed him for one night. Maybe two.”
Mara stared at the machine.
Tess lowered the spoon. “That’s the part she never told me.”
“You heard this before?” Mara asked.
“Once. In Minneapolis. She made the tape in the bathroom because Cal was asleep in the other room.”
“Why didn’t you give it to me then?”
“Because you weren’t asking about Elena. You were asking whether she was innocent.”
The answer irritated Mara, perhaps because it was close to true. “Those aren’t separate questions.”
“They were to her.”
On the tape, Elena breathed near the microphone.
“I’m sorry, Mara. Not for leaving. I’m sorry I made you carry the wrong part of it. You thought I took the camera because I wanted to hurt you or because I wanted to prove you were weak. I took it because you asked me to help, and I didn’t know how to help without becoming the person who decided what everyone else would remember.”
Mara sat very still.
“Don’t trust Thomas’s kindness,” Elena said. “It is real. That’s what makes it useful to him.”
The tape warbled. A second voice appeared beneath the hiss, too faint to understand. Elena stopped speaking. There was a scrape, then a door closing.
When her voice returned, it was lower.
“If Cal comes back, don’t let him tell you he found us by accident. If he says he was saving me, ask what he wanted saved.”
The tape ran on through several seconds of empty room. Then it clicked off.
Noah looked at Mara. “Do you want to hear the last part again?”
“No.”
Tess set the spoon on the counter. “There may be more on the other side.”
Mara turned the cassette over. The label on the reverse had been rubbed nearly clean. In one corner, beneath a smear of ink, she could make out a single word: “After.”
“You knew there was a second side,” Mara said.
“I knew Elena recorded one. I don’t know whether she finished it.”
Mara pressed the play button. The machine gave a dry mechanical click, then began its thin, patient hiss.
For several seconds, nothing happened. From the other room came the smell of onions beginning to brown. Noah stood and lowered the heat beneath the pan without asking. Tess watched him do it, then returned her attention to the player.
A man’s voice emerged from the tape.
“Mara?”
The recording ended.
Noah turned from the stove. Tess’s face had lost its guarded composure.
Mara knew the voice. She had heard it in the museum office, in the pump house, on the telephone when Thomas called her after Elena disappeared. But the tape had caught him before the careful warmth, before the pauses that made every admission seem reluctant.
Thomas said her name again, and this time the word was followed by a sound she could not identify: a door locking, or opening.
She stopped the machine.
“Play it,” Tess said.
Mara kept her finger on the button. “Not here.”
Tess stepped toward her. “You came for the truth.”
“I came for what you remembered.”
“And now?”
Mara removed the cassette and put it back in its cracked case. The answer had changed shape while she was speaking. She no longer wanted Thomas to explain the recording in the museum, surrounded by empty cases and the pale marks of removed labels. She wanted June present. She wanted Samuel present. She wanted Noah to hear every word, even if he told her afterward that wanting witnesses was another way of postponing belief.
“Now I’m going home,” Mara said. “And I’m going to make him listen.”
Tess reached for the cassette but stopped short of touching it. “He won’t listen if he thinks you’re asking permission.”
Mara slipped the tape into her coat pocket. “Then I won’t ask.”
Outside, evening had lowered itself over the harbor. Noah gathered the canvas bag and thanked Tess for the coffee neither of them had finished. At the door, Tess caught Mara’s sleeve.
“Elena took the camera because you trusted her,” she said. “Don’t turn that into another reason to punish her.”
Mara looked back at the kitchen, at the player and the cooling pan, at the life Tess had built among objects that had survived other people’s decisions.
“I’m trying to remember what I trusted,” she said.
Tess released her. “That’s different.”
On the drive south, Noah did not turn on the radio. The cassette rested in the cup holder between them. Mara kept looking at it whenever the road straightened, not because she expected it to move, but because Thomas’s voice had entered the story before she understood he was already there.
