  1. Chapter31

    The Name in the Margin

    The next morning

Ava, Lucas, Silas, and Caleb reach St. Anselm and recover Merrick Saye’s private ledger notes. The original record confirms that Belinda, injured and wearing or carrying the red glove, sought Caleb before Orrin Rusk arrived asking for her and then followed the westbound route toward the Prairie Lantern. The group decides to investigate the burned Rusk farm and the people who helped Orrin travel west, while Belinda’s fate remains unresolved.

  2. Chapter32

What the Fire Could Not Take

    That same afternoon

Ava’s group searches the burned Rusk farm and finds Orrin’s hidden toolbox, including photographs and notes proving he reached Belinda at the Prairie Lantern, showed her the photograph, and took her to a Morrow County women’s intake shelter. The shelter refused Belinda, who left alone with Orrin’s photograph and turned south; Ava obtains the name of the intake nurse, Darlene Wexler, as the next concrete lead.

  3. Chapter33

    The Door That Stayed Open

The next morning through late afternoon

Ava and Silas locate former intake nurse Darlene Wexler, who confirms Belinda was refused shelter, returned to the depot, and planned to take a 4:05 bus south to St. Cloud. Darlene reveals she concealed a Polaroid Belinda left in her coat, showing the dark sedan nearby and naming Maribel Hart as the person to seek at the southern depot; Ava and Silas pursue that lead.

  4. Chapter34

The Woman at the Southern Depot

    That same evening

Ava and Silas locate Maribel Hart, who confirms that Belinda reached the St. Cloud depot alive at 6:12 p.m. on November 21, 2009. Maribel saw the brown-coated man arrive, learned Belinda distrusted a woman wearing a Frosthaven church pin, and reveals that Belinda left a bag and a letter for Ava in depot locker 18.

  5. Chapter35

    The Things She Left Behind

    That same night

Ava and Silas open locker 18 and recover Belinda’s bag, final letter, notebook, photographs, and red glove. Belinda confirms that the church-pinned woman knew Helen, knew about Ava and Elise, and withdrew her help; a photograph and repeated notes identify the woman as Ruth Calder, while Helen’s image proves she knew Elise was alive before abandoning her.

  6. Chapter36

    The Promise on Willow Street

    That same afternoon

Ava and Silas confront Ruth Calder, who admits she took Belinda to a parish office, called Helen, and watched Belinda refuse to go with Helen and Lucas. Ruth reveals she lied to Helen, gave Belinda money, and watched her board a 10:40 p.m. bus to Duluth, preserving a ticket and an address for Merrick Saye. Ava brings the evidence to Lucas, who visibly recognizes that the Duluth trail still contains something he concealed.
