The Aperture Under the Rail
That same day, from late morning into afternoon
Claire reaches an abandoned rail tunnel and witnesses Marcus Cole’s cracked calibration mass itself crossing three increasingly narrow calibrated layers. The structure briefly displays the geometry of the unfinished third depression, while a more convincing Marcus-like voice addresses her; Claire refuses to accept it as testimony and records that the passage is narrowing toward a marked alignment point.

The Mark Above the World
That same evening
Claire reaches the first abandoned signal tower and witnesses the layered aperture reopen above the ground route. Marcus’s cracked mass reaches the broad pale alignment field and crosses the dark rectangular mark, while a fragmented humanoid figure and Marcus-like voice attempt to draw Claire into the unfinished third-depression geometry; she breaks the instrument alignment and refuses to become its witness. The mass’s engraved date is revealed to be tomorrow, and her final photograph points back toward Tokyo.

The Date That Wasn’t Tomorrow
The following morning
Claire returns to the Tokyo Observatory before the engraved crossing and finds the chamber has converted the tower’s final line into a new Tokyo-facing aperture. She refuses to connect Marcus’s voice, identity, and crossing, disrupts the chamber’s attempted designation, and records that “tomorrow” is a condition of crossing rather than a civil date; the Cole mass disappears again while a new line points beneath Tokyo.
- Chapter34
The Weight Beneath
That same morning
Claire follows the answering knock into an unrecorded foundation chamber, where a Marcus-like displacement and suspended coat appear beneath Tokyo. She refuses to designate the figure, but receives a platinum-iridium fragment marked with the beginning of COLE’s name and a direct statement that the mass crossed; the route now points deeper beneath Tokyo.
- Chapter35
The Depth That Answered
That same night
Claire follows the red route beneath the Observatory and finds a lower calibrated room where Marcus’s cracked mass appears suspended across a black aperture. A Marcus-like figure repeats “Mass crossed,” while the route divides toward the north coast, disputed waters, and a third downward branch; Claire refuses to become its witness and preserves a second fragment of the COLE engraving.
- Chapter36
The Fourth Position
That same morning
Claire brings retired instrument engineer Maki Fushida to the lower chamber as an independent observer, carefully keeping their instruments and records separate. The empty third circle opens onto the original blue-filament reference mass and three connected routes, but the chamber tries to designate Maki as a witness; they disrupt the designation and tear apart the mechanical record before it can be unified. A fourth knock follows, and Claire decides the next descent must involve observers positioned at the other branches.

Separate Roads
The same day, from late morning into evening
Claire recruits Julian for the northern route and Nora for the western route, giving each sealed, incomplete instructions and forbidding shared clocks, labels, or route data. A disconnected phone and the lower chamber respond to the arrangement, while Maki agrees to remain in Tokyo with Claire and preserve a separate observation as the fourth position begins to localize toward the north.
- Chapter38
The Road That Wasn’t on the Map
The following day, from before dawn through late afternoon
Julian begins the northern route and witnesses the chamber responding during his departure, at a shrine where water runs uphill, and along a temporary black road marked with the same grid geometry seen beneath Tokyo. He refuses to call Claire or follow the vanishing road blindly, preserves an independent record, then opens the next sealed instruction after the route has measured his choice.
- Chapter39
The Instruction That Chose Him
That same afternoon into early evening
Julian opens Claire’s next instruction and reaches an abandoned northern flood-control gate, where the chamber separates his gravimeter from the mechanical record and marks the floor with four divisions. He refuses to let the instruction dictate the observation, keeps the records physically separate, and sees a fragment bearing the end of COLE’s name emerge from the opened gate.
- Chapter40
The Name Under the Water
That same afternoon
At the northern gate, water clears the fragment enough for Julian to photograph COLE and TOMORROW before the metal passes beneath the slab. He returns to the roadside marks and tears the recorder strip where its self-written line would join his separate observations, preserving the pieces apart but sacrificing the continuous mechanical record; the gate is shut when he returns.
