  1. Chapter41

The Other Side of the Gate

    The next morning

Julian develops the northern photographs and finds that the fragment passed beneath the gate across a faintly gridded surface, not ordinary concrete. A separate test with a scratched pebble confirms that the passage can carry an object through to the downstream side, but the destination beyond the culvert remains unknown; Julian chooses to follow it while keeping his records apart.

  2. Chapter42

    Where the Culvert Ends

    The same afternoon

Julian follows the culvert to a gridded surface beyond the gate’s passage and sees the cracked COLE fragment suspended there, still bearing TOMORROW. He sends a washer across but refuses to cross himself, preserving separate records and leaving the mass beyond his reach; he plans to return with another camera.

  3. Chapter43

A Camera on the Other Side

    The next morning

Julian returned with a second camera and used a survey pole to photograph the gridded surface without crossing it. He found the COLE fragment positioned above the unscored cell of a four-part mark, and captured a fleeting segmented line between the fragment and that cell; the fragment shifted as he withdrew the camera, leaving Julian with new evidence but no answer about what the cell awaits.

  4. Chapter44

    The Fourth Cut

Six days later, over one morning

Julian returned to the gridded surface with flood-control technician Sayo Inada as an independent observer. When he stepped onto the smooth cell, a cut appeared beneath his boot and a segmented line connected it to the COLE fragment; he chose to retrieve the mass and brought it back across the boundary. Sayo recorded only what she directly observed, while the meaning of TOMORROW and the cell’s response remain unresolved.

  5. Chapter45

    The Case Without an Address

    The morning after the crossing

Julian sealed his photographs and torn mechanical record separately, while Sayo kept her own limited account and refused to endorse his interpretation. He chose not to ship the COLE fragment to Claire yet: an ordinary delivery would attach the mass to a route and destination, and he wants to test whether it can pass back through the gate before deciding how to transfer it.

  6. Chapter46

    The Fourth Section

A wet morning, several days after Julian’s last visit

Julian returned to the northern gate without cameras or records and confirmed that the cut in the fourth section remained. The gate carried the COLE fragment back to the gridded surface, where it hung above the cut as a segmented line connected them and the four-part mark became complete; Julian chose not to cross and retrieve it, leaving the fragment there and facing the problem of how to tell Claire without joining their accounts.
