  1. Chapter11

    The Room of Witnesses

    The same night

Iris, Ruth, Tomás, and Edwin enter the hidden Room 17, where Iris learns the witness system predates her father and can construct a death around an invisible subject. The witness-form imitates Ruth, the room’s arrangement is disrupted, and a new photograph reclassifies Iris from witness to owner before Edwin disappears behind the sealed door.

  2. Chapter12

    The Owner’s Ledger

    That same night

Iris finds Edwin in a hidden owner’s passage beneath Room 17 and learns that Calloway & Sons’ owner inherits the system’s unfinished death arrangements. She disrupts the room’s attempt to record her possession of Edwin, but a new photograph reveals a ledger bearing her name and an empty signature line beneath it.

  3. Chapter13

    The Signature Below the Name

    That same night, October 16

Iris opens the brass plate and reaches the owner’s ledger, where the witness-form tries to turn every refusal into acceptance. She uses the system’s dependence on a valid witness and Tomás’s camera to trap the form in a photograph and mark the ledger OWNER CONTESTED, but the system immediately prepares an October 17 record naming Iris as designated witness again.

  4. Chapter14

The Keeper at the Last Door

    That same night, October 16

Iris and Tomás enter the corridor beyond the ledger room and meet Agnes Vale, the keeper who preserves the death records and explains that the photographs are made from human decisions but require witnesses to become records. Iris learns that trapping the witness-form threatens to force every open record to seek a witness, then photographs Agnes in an October 17 record and turns the system’s observation back on its keeper; Agnes vanishes, leaving her camera behind.

  5. Chapter15

    The Doors That Opened

    That same night

Iris and Tomás escape the opening archive corridor with Agnes’s camera, but its records begin demanding witnesses from every unfinished death arrangement. Back in Room 17, Agnes’s October 17 image reveals that she has redirected her record into an older arrangement involving Edwin, and Iris uses three cameras to mark both the owner and keeper designations as contested.

  6. Chapter16

    The Witness’s Objection

A few minutes after Chapter 15

Agnes communicates that her October 17 image records a witness rather than her death. Edwin admits he once agreed to witness an arrangement in the preparation room, then abandoned it after discovering the record was trying to make him witness his own death. Iris photographs the contested image and causes the ledger to add SUBJECT CONTESTED, interrupting the witness-form before it can reveal the body beneath the sheet.

  7. Chapter17

    The Witness at the Wall

The same night, minutes after Chapter 16

Iris chooses the wall rather than the sealed preparation-room door and opens a hidden passage where a faceless witness-form, wearing Edwin’s aspects, tries to designate her as witness. She photographs it into a new image marked WITNESS ABSENT, but the preparation-room door reveals a scarred hand wearing Edwin’s ring, and the ledger system shifts its demand from witness to owner.

  8. Chapter18

    The Owner’s Choice

    That same night

Iris discovers that OWNER REQUIRED means she must authorize or contest the identity of the body in the October 17 arrangement, and the record offers alternative subjects, including Agnes. She marks the subject contested, but the archive removes the need for a witness and designates Iris herself as the subject for October 18; she chooses to open the preparation-room door despite Edwin’s warning.

  9. Chapter19

    The Room Without a Body

    That same night

Iris enters the preparation room and discovers that the supposed October 17 body was an empty linen form Edwin created as a warning; the archive had been waiting for the owner to supply a name. She refuses to designate Edwin, Agnes, or herself, records SUBJECT: ABSENT, and causes the preparation arrangement to collapse and release her owner designation—but Edwin vanishes, and the witness-form reappears in the doorway’s image.

  10. Chapter20

    The Absence of Edwin Calloway

The same evening, extending into the night

The photograph beneath the preparation-room door shows Edwin’s empty study dated October 19, labeling him an absent subject and Iris the required witness. Iris files an ordinary missing-person report to anchor Edwin’s disappearance in a human record, which briefly alters the image and reveals Edwin’s message that Agnes knows where the absent are kept.
