The First Exposure

The first two days

Iris finds an impossible Polaroid in her late father’s study showing her own corpse in the funeral home, dated seven days in the future. Tomás examines the image but cannot explain it; the next morning, a second photograph appears showing Iris dead on the back staircase, dated one day sooner, prompting Iris to bring the camera and photo to Deputy Ruth Ellery as a stalking case.

The Third Exposure

That same afternoon

The camera produces two more photographs despite being sealed: one shows Iris dead in her father’s study on October 16, and another shows her supposedly dead father holding the camera in the preparation room on October 15. The images reveal the message “DON’T BURY ME” and a figure wearing her father’s ring, prompting Iris to go to his grave rather than return home.

The Empty Grave

That same night

Iris and Ruth reach the Calloway family grave and discover that her father’s urn is empty, replaced by a note warning her to ask who benefited from his death and a brass key marked 17. The Polaroid produces an October 13 image showing a scarred hand wearing her father’s ring inside the grave; when the hand physically appears, the key vanishes and leads Iris to a hidden service door in the cemetery wall.

The Man Behind the Door

That same night, moments after Chapter 3

Iris and Ruth open the cemetery service door and discover Edwin Mercer bound beneath a hidden records room. Mercer claims Iris’s father faked his death because he knew about the future photographs, but the camera produces a new image dated October 12 showing a door that appears behind the shelves. Iris opens it and finds her supposedly dead father alive, warning that she will die tomorrow if she remains in the tunnel.

The Body That Would Not Stay Buried

That same night, October 12

Iris escapes the tunnel with Ruth and Mercer after confronting the thing wearing her father’s shoes; her father confirms he substituted his own body and admits he does not know who creates the photographs. A new October 13 image predicts Mercer’s death and shows a hidden photographer, while the transfer box reveals a blank photograph marked October 14.

The Keeper of the Dead

The same night, from late evening to just before midnight

Iris opens the transfer records and learns that the photographs document deaths prepared through a Decision, Method, and Witness, with Mercer marked as a corrective transfer because he tried to destroy the records. She discovers Tomás took the tunnel photograph and has prepared the funeral home as the next witness site, but the October 14 image reveals that someone wearing her father’s ring is directing events from behind the observation glass.

The Man Behind the Glass

That same night

Iris confronts the ring-wearing figure and discovers that her father, Edwin, is alive and knowingly allowed her death to become the system’s next prepared record. She, Ruth, and Tomás disrupt the method and destroy Tomás’s camera, but a changing Polaroid reveals an unknown camera-bearer with Edwin’s scarred hand and suggests Edwin was the system’s first witness.

The Witness in the Dark

The same night, minutes after Chapter 7

Iris, Ruth, Tomás, and Edwin confront the unseen photographer in the chapel. The photographer is revealed not as Edwin’s accomplice but as the surviving witness-role made flesh after Edwin interrupted his own death; it tries to complete Edwin’s record, but Iris and the others seize its camera and force it into an empty casket. The camera continues producing images, including one of Iris’s double, leaving the system active and adapting.

The Face in the Window

That same night, moving into October 15

Iris and the others open the casket and find the witness-form has escaped into the photographic record; the image tries to force a hand through the paper, but Ruth destroys it with a gunshot. The camera immediately produces an October 15 photograph showing Iris as the new designated witness, while Edwin vanishes toward the preparation room and the faceless role begins imitating Iris directly.

The Witness in the Glass

That same night, minutes after Chapter 9

Iris enters the preparation room and finds Edwin strapped to the embalming table, deliberately offering himself as the completed death that might spare her. She removes the prepared method and photographs the Iris-double in the observation glass, disrupting the immediate record—but the camera advances the record to October 16 and produces a brass key marked 17, while the glass declares that Iris has now seen Edwin and must see herself.
