The Things Left Behind

The first morning of the museum’s final year

Mara begins cataloguing four troubling donations at the Bellwether County Museum: worn dance shoes, undeveloped film, an unidentified brass key, and a bloodstained child’s coat. The objects quickly connect to July 1989 and to Mara’s estranged sister Elena, whose handwriting appears on a warning attached to the key.

The Room Behind the Stage

Mara visits Iris Bell, who reveals that Elena was frightened the night she vanished and had found something belonging to a child in the old pump house. Iris confirms that Elena planned to meet Walter Mercer, while newly developed photographs show Elena beside Walter and an obscured third figure.

The Shape of the Missing

June’s enlarged photograph confirms that the deliberately erased third figure was likely a child. Walter admits the child was his grandson Daniel, injured in a concealed 1989 accident at the pump house, and that Elena confronted him with evidence of falsified records. He gives Mara a strip of negatives showing Elena addressing the photographer—and Mara recognizes the photographer’s bracelet as her own.

Mara examines Walter’s negatives and begins recovering fragments of the night Elena vanished, including the realization that she photographed Daniel herself. Thomas reveals the pump house will be demolished within days, and Mara finds a message from Elena suggesting Mara saw Daniel before anyone else did, while an unseen observer appears to be monitoring the site.

Mara and June enter the pump house before its scheduled demolition and discover a recently disturbed cavity containing Elena’s message: “MARA DIDN’T TAKE THE PICTURES.” Mara recovers another fragment of the night Elena vanished, while evidence of a present-day intruder leads to an envelope implicating Thomas in bringing her to the pump house in 1989.

The Man Who Made the Call

Mara and June confront Thomas, who admits that he called Mara to the pump house in 1989 after Elena reported Daniel’s injury. He reveals that Mara photographed Daniel, but another unseen person photographed Mara and Elena, while the museum’s copy of Elena’s film disappeared; Samuel then calls to say the newly developed film contains a photograph of Elena taking the image found in Thomas’s envelope.

The Second Exposure

The following morning, less than two hours before the pump house demolition

Samuel’s enlarged print identifies the unseen photographer as likely Raymond Mercer, Daniel’s father, based on a distinctive watch and scar. Mara, June, Samuel, and Noah race to the pump house before demolition and discover a hidden film roll and Elena’s note accusing Raymond of taking the second roll, along with a new question about what Mara remembered after the flash.

Mara and her companions escape the pump house just before demolition, while Thomas admits that Raymond photographed the sisters after Mara was disoriented by the flash. Samuel develops the recovered roll: it shows Raymond taking Mara’s camera and Elena confronting someone beyond the service-room door, with a note identifying an unknown second accomplice.

The Person Outside the Frame

Thomas confesses that he was the unidentified figure in the service-room photograph and admits he photographed Daniel’s injury at Elena’s request before helping conceal the truth. He gives Mara a letter and photograph Elena sent three weeks after vanishing, revealing that Elena left alive and may have been accompanied by someone; the postmark, however, is dated six years later than Thomas claimed.

The Address That Remained

The next day

Mara, June, and Thomas travel to Minneapolis and locate Elena’s former apartment. The building’s superintendent reveals that Elena lived there from 1994 to 1996 with an unnamed man called Cal and briefly sheltered a scar-chinned teenage girl; Elena’s hidden contact sheet identifies the girl as someone Mara remembers from the night at the pump house. A note accuses Thomas of lying about the girl’s existence.
