The Box Ruth Kept
The same afternoon
In Ruth Kessler’s basement office, Mara receives Elena’s abandoned box and learns that the scar-chinned girl was Teresa “Tess” Venn, who remembered Daniel’s injury and the events after the flash. The papers also identify Elena’s companion Cal as Cal Mercer, Raymond’s brother, and reveal that he found Elena and Tess before they could disappear from him; an old Duluth address offers the next lead.

The Address on the Hill
The next morning through that afternoon
Mara and Noah drive to the Duluth address and find Teresa “Tess” Venn alive. Tess confirms that both Thomas and Cal were present after the pump-house flash, clarifies that Elena did not simply leave with Cal, and gives Mara a cassette labeled for her, warning that the crucial question concerns why Elena took Mara’s camera.
- Chapter13
The Voice on the Tape
That same evening
Mara and Noah listen to Elena’s cassette at Tess’s home. Elena explains that Mara gave her the camera before the flash, that Elena surrendered it to Raymond while trying to preserve evidence, and that Thomas and Cal each concealed different parts of what followed. The cassette’s second side unexpectedly contains Thomas calling Mara’s name, leaving Mara determined to return to the museum and confront him with witnesses.
- Chapter14
The Room Behind the Door
That evening
Mara returns to the museum with Noah, June, and Samuel and confronts Thomas while they listen to both sides of Elena’s cassette. Thomas admits he knowingly sent Elena into the unusable service room, briefly locked the door at Raymond’s urging, and concealed the extent of his actions; Mara refuses an apology and orders him to give the county the same account at the next transfer meeting.
- Chapter15
The Record of the Door
The next morning
At the county transfer meeting, Thomas publicly repeats his confession, including that he locked the pump-house service-room door, while Mara ensures the cassette, testimony, photographs, and gaps in the record are formally accepted. Afterward Thomas gives Mara a box Elena left behind containing a contact sheet, a key, and a note about a woman whose face was cut from a photograph, along with a crossed-out St. Louis address.
- Chapter16
The Address That Was Crossed Out
The next day
Mara and Noah follow the crossed-out St. Louis address and identify the cut-out woman as Miriam Kline, who sheltered Elena and helped her hide evidence from Cal and Raymond. They recover a cassette, a photograph, and a packet from the old boardinghouse mailbox, but June calls to report that Cal Mercer has arrived at the museum asking for Elena’s records.
- Chapter17
The Man Who Came Back
That same evening
Mara returns to the closing museum and confronts Cal Mercer in front of June and Noah. Cal admits that Raymond’s claim about protecting Daniel was a lie, confirms that he knew about the stolen photographs, and reveals that Elena sent him a postcard after leaving St. Louis; he refuses to disclose its origin unless Mara brings the cassette. Mara turns the demand around, orders the tape played, and threatens to add Cal’s letters to the official record if he does not bring the postcard that night.
- Chapter18
The Postcard in the Dark
That same night
June plays the cassette’s second side, confirming Thomas’s frightened call and the ambiguous sound of the pump-house door. Cal returns with Elena’s July 1996 postcard from Port Orford, Oregon: Elena says she is safe, refuses to return, explains why she took Mara’s camera, and leaves a cryptic instruction to ask for the woman who keeps the blue room. Mara adds the postcard and Cal’s admissions to the official record and chooses to pursue the new lead without pretending it will necessarily bring Elena back.
- Chapter19
The Room Painted Blue
The next morning
Mara and June trace Harbor House and speak with Etta Rusk, who remembers Elena staying there for three nights in 1996 and photographing Cora Bell, an abandoned woman in the blue room. Etta has an unopened parcel Elena left behind and agrees to show it to Mara in person, giving Mara a concrete destination without promising Elena’s return.
- Chapter20
What Was Left in the Blue Room
The following day and the next afternoon
Mara and June travel to Harbor House, where Etta gives Mara Elena’s sealed parcel in person. It contains Elena’s photograph of Cora Bell in the blue room and a letter explaining that Elena left Port Orford deliberately, without offering a route to find her; Mara accepts Cora’s story as its own record rather than treating it as another clue to Elena.
