  1. Chapter21

    The Seventh Knock

    Later that same day

The seventh knock arrives and causes the public shard to reveal a moving route from the customs hall to the shore. Eira refuses both private control and unilateral state custody, leading the shard publicly toward the wreck; Klain identifies the name in the reflection as Aren, and the distant red presence finally begins approaching while the city faces a seventh collective decision.

  2. Chapter22

    The Choice That Answered Back

    Minutes after the seventh knock

Eira refuses to make the seventh decision for Noah’s Halo and publicly allows the lunar shard to choose. The shard chooses the buried wreck, where a seventh chair marked AREN and six waiting figures reveal that the vessel has preserved the city’s choices; the red presence arrives as witness, and the shard shows a figure in Eira’s old diving coat claiming to be the promise she made before forgetting.

  3. Chapter23

    The Promise That Was Buried

Several minutes after the seventh chair answers

Eira learns that the figure in her old diving coat was a preserved memory of her promise to young Klain: she would become the door that opened the way, while forgetting kept him alive. The Aren designation is revealed as a role rather than Klain’s identity; Klain accepts being the remembering keeper without claiming the name, while Eira takes the black key from the shard’s reflection and becomes the opener once more.

  4. Chapter24

    The Lock Beneath the Wreck

    That same moment

Eira uses the black key to unlock a hidden shaft beneath the collapsing wreck, while Klain remembers that the original opening cost the keeper the memory of everything the tide erased. With Suda and the red witness descending behind them, they reach a pale tide-glass door labeled NOT NEW LAND, NOT PRISON, THE FIRST SHORE REMEMBERS—and unlock it.

  5. Chapter25

    The Shore Before the Shore

Moments after the pale door opens

Eira, Klain, and Suda enter a preserved memory of the first shore, where they witness the original seven-tide catastrophe and learn that Noah’s Halo’s civic choices repeat an older pattern of preservation, forgetting, and return. Opening the pale door has already cost Eira the exact memory of her promise to young Klain, which Klain now carries; beyond a blue-painted child’s door waits the first witness and the next answer.

  6. Chapter26

    The Choice Beneath the Moon

    The same moment

Eira and Klain meet Vey, the first witness, who reveals that the first shore deliberately broke the moon to save itself from a failed tide engine, then built forgetting into the lock to conceal its choice. New Land is real but remains beneath the preserved shore, and the next stage requires Noah’s Halo to count and return the people erased by the original catastrophe; Vey enters the lunar fragment and leaves the command to return the first name.

  7. Chapter27

    The Name Beneath the Name

That same descent, less than an hour later

Eira and Klain identify Sareth Ion as the first person erased by the original catastrophe: the child who counted the dead before being taken herself. Rather than return the name privately, Eira routes it through Noah’s Halo, and the city collectively speaks it, allowing Sareth to pass through the door; six more names remain.

  8. Chapter28

    The Second Line

    The following morning

Eira and Klain decode the lunar fragment’s sounds as clues to the erased names and use the Halo’s district archives to identify Dessa Orren, the harbor anchor-keeper who stayed behind during the original catastrophe. The city collectively returns Dessa’s name, stabilizing the descending districts for another brief interval, but the door now demands the third name and the fragment’s next clue is an unfinished humming tune.

  9. Chapter29

    The Humming Between Notes

The same morning, over several hours

Eira recognizes the three-note hum as a route through the first shore’s records and, with the public archives and Suda’s salvage knowledge, traces it to Orra Pell, a lower census keeper who continued counting people after the official count was closed. Noah’s Halo collectively returns Orra, briefly halting its descent and then causing the districts to begin drawing back together, while the door advances to the fourth name.

  10. Chapter30

    The Pattern of the Break

    That same day

As Noah’s Halo converges in a dangerous pattern, Eira decodes the fourth fragment signal as a movement sequence rather than a name. A preserved vision identifies Talla Rusk, the first shore’s pattern keeper, who divided the Halo to keep the failed tide engine from drawing the future through a closed ring; the city begins correcting its convergence, but Talla’s name has not yet been fully returned.
