  1. Chapter31

    The Breathing Center

The same day, continuing from the previous chapter

Eira leads Noah’s Halo through the complete brace order, forcing the districts to separate without abandoning one another. The city collectively accepts and returns Talla Rusk, opening the blue-painted door and revealing the fifth erased person, Ilyen Voss, whose record was kept after the official count ended. The center remains unstable, and Klain recognizes the new name from a memory he may have been made to hide.

  2. Chapter32

    The Hand After the Count

    That same night

Eira and Klain descend into the lower census office and find Ilyen Voss’s hidden record, learning that he concealed no names—only the official ending imposed on them. Noah’s Halo collectively returns Ilyen, stabilizing the breathing center and igniting the fifth light, but Ilyen warns that the sixth erased presence was not erased from the shore; six knocks answer from beneath the city.

  3. Chapter33

    The Half Beneath the Ring

    That same night

Eira deciphers Ilyen’s split-circle mark as a map of a severed chamber beneath Noah’s Halo’s breathing center and opens it with the black key. There she finds the sixth presence: a living former hinge-keeper bound into the city’s machinery, who says the sixth return is not her name but the function the first shore forced her to perform; Noah’s Halo is beginning to close around her.

  4. Chapter34

    The Name the City Kept

    That same descent

Eira reconnects Noah’s Halo’s district conduits and deciphers the hidden brace-order transmission, allowing the city to speak the hinge-keeper’s suppressed name: Vesh Lennen. Her name is returned and the districts stop being dragged downward, but Vesh remains physically bound to one surviving conduit, while a newly revealed seventh line and a knock from the deep lock show that her extraction is still owed.

  5. Chapter35

    The Thing Beneath the Lock

    That same night

Eira learns that the deep lock does not contain the failed tide engine itself, but the original shore’s disastrous choice to force one future into existence. She brings the decision to the districts, then cuts the final conduit with the city’s divided consent, freeing Vesh physically while releasing a fragment of the original engine and waking the lock. Klain’s red signal splits into seven branches as future voices begin speaking through the opening.

  6. Chapter36

    The Futures That Knocked

    The same hour

Eira and Klain determine that the voices are contradictory possible futures pressing against the present, not futures that have already entered it. With Vesh’s guidance, Eira publicly refuses to let any branch command the city, weakening the fragment’s hold but leaving the deep lock open; Orra then reports an eighth statement claiming the lock was not waiting for the seventh tide at all.

  7. Chapter37

    The Eighth Answer

    That same hour

Eira and Klain learn that the eighth statement is not another possible future but a revelation about the seventh function: refusal prevents the lock from installing any branch as reality, yet that refusal must be collectively witnessed. The Halo’s center begins closing again, and Eira starts a district-wide count; six districts refuse, but the seventh answer must come from the voiceless center once occupied by Vesh.

  8. Chapter38

    The Voice in the Center

    The next hour

Eira prevents the sealed center from being forced into another choice by having the six districts testify rather than command, then uses the silver witness-disk to preserve the center’s unfilled space. The Halo’s inward descent stops, and the center’s refusal is publicly recorded, but the disk reveals a red path beneath the deep lock that answers with another knock.

  9. Chapter39

    The Door Beneath the Lock

    That same hour

Eira identifies the red path as a remainder left by the first shore’s unfinished choice and finds a hidden stair beneath the deep lock. At its end, a black door rejects the key and reveals that it will open only through a willing return; Eira, Klain, Vesh, and recorded witnesses begin the descent while the Halo remains stable above.

  10. Chapter40

    The Promise Given Back

That same descent, moments after Chapter 39

Eira realizes the black door demands the return of inherited claims rather than a physical sacrifice. She returns the promise she made to young Klain, Klain returns the imposed Aren role, Vesh returns the duty of solitary suffering, and the witnesses return the closed count; the door opens onto the first shore, where the erased dead offer the choice of what comes next back to the living.
